I am working on a friends Toshiba Satellite P75-A7100 laptop. His hard drive crashed. Connected hard drive to my PC and cannot access it. My friend has no disks or backups. I will need to replace the hard drive. Having said this, I have a couple of questions to start with:

1. I see no COA sticker on this laptop. I'm not sure about how to activate once 8.1 is loaded.

2. Where would I get 8.1? Is there an iso download and where to get a good one?

Hello copiman, :)

Since the laptop came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled, the product key will be embedded in the UEFI firmware chip on the OEM PC. When you install Windows 8.1 on the new hard drive, it should auto detect the key in the UEFI firmware chip and automatically be entered and activated with the key. They did away with COA stickers starting with Windows 8 to prevent people from being able to steal the keys as easily.

You can download an official Windows 8.1 ISO file directly from Microsoft using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below.

Thanks Brink. As always you have been very helpful. This is my first hard drive replacement in an 8.1. Done many others, so this seems straight forward.

I have another question. How would I know what version of 8.1 was on the laptop so I can choose the right one in step 3?

Toshiba would probably be your best place to find the info you need.

Whatever OS you decide to install, for it to match the key in the Bios, it would have to be exactly the same as was installed by Toshiba.
Or just ignore the key in the bios and install what you want.

You don't say where you are......but if you were close to me, I'd just say, "bring it on over here and I'll help you with it."
The US is an awfully big place!

Good Luck,
TechnoMage
