Laptop freezes when browsing

My laptop has been randomly freezing when browsing the internet (with Chrome or Firefox) or Windows Explorer.

It's not a total freeze, as if I place the cursor within half an inch of the vertical scroll bar I'm able to scroll the page. However I can't do much else other than use keystrokes to reboot.

This started about 5-6 months ago, after the machine was 4 months old.

I've tried various suggestions such as disabling Background Intelligent Transfer Service and disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available in Firefox" but the random freezing still occurs. It can happen after 2 minutes or after an hour.

Laptop is an Lenovo i3-40005U; 4GB RAM; Intel Graphics card; running pre-installed Windows 8.1.

All drivers are up to date.

Grateful for any help.

Thanks in advance

Also might as well run Eset and see if it finds anything..

are the freezes on specific websites?

It's best you run this scanner with Internet Explorer because if you use Firefox or Chrome, it makes you isntall a little file before.. and you have to accept and press yes and this and that..

but when you are just going on the internet for everything else, NEVER use Internet Explorer as it's too unsafe...

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have not been disabling "BITS" recently and found that the "freezing" was less common.

I've also run ESet, which found and removed several unwanted applications. So far, so good.

You are never just good.. you got to run all the scans.. look at these.. ha..

not safe in my book till these have been run and find nothing.

questions?

Every single one is free (a couple you do have to read when installing and uncheck 1 or 2 things.. no big things though..)
