Another reason Microsoft should give windows 8 away for free...

I'm thinking that Microsoft shouldn't be charging anything for Win8 moving forward.

As if others had not already discovered what an ad filled universe Metro is going to be (though the audio player), hear it from Microsoft itself!

Given this, why are we paying anything for it at all?

Windows 8 in-app advertisements get their own preview -- Engadget

Holy cow I could not live with an app that had ads that took up as much space as the content on screen :p

What total shite Windows 8 is. I will NEVER use any 'apps' filled with adware on my pc. I'll stick to Windows 7 and plain old fashioned 'programs' thank you very much.

I think they already have this on the Xbox dashboard don't they?
I wont be using any metro apps anyway so wont see them :)

The ads on the XBox dashboard are /mostly/ out of the way/ignorable on the main menu.

This is more like having ads come up while you are playing a game. These are "in app" advertisment's :/ In fact I've noticed the same thing happening in my XBox excersize program and /there/ it's infuriating. Bought the platform, bought the title, STILL advertised at!

Well I hear you about not using metro :/ But MS's forced metro screen strategy gets clearer by the second :)

P.S. anyone see the movie Brazil? The ad blitzes, the billboard lined highways? Truly visionary!

I think people should stop writing dystopian novels and movies, they always come true!!!

Well i have kind of got used to the metro start screen now, and I have unistalled all the metro apps so I guess I wont see any adds :)
Maybe one day somebody will invent an add blocker for metro...didnt the net used to be free of any ads a long time ago? Looked what happend to that, thank goodness for ad block and flash block extensions on browsers.

Brazil was one of the most trippest, greatest movies I've seen....

But this is true, sci fi novels and movies aren't guidebooks. Just watch, the ads from Minority Report will be coming to a Walmart near you...

Hi all
Metro lovers -- please answer me this SIMPLE question -- and it's not about any work related stuff as I think we all agree Metro is going NOWHERE in a proper Work environment.

If say I use something like the METRO stocks application --THEN HOW do I compare the market movements of 3 different stocks at the same time on the same page. Full screen only doesn't allow multiple windows to be shown concurrently.

You can get all 3 if you want but you can't display them together on the same screen (or even on multiple monitors).

This is a SHOWSTOPPER for metro on a desktop -- only having full screen apps --FORGET IT.

Fine for tablets and smart phones -- but a desktop PC (and that includes laptops used in most workplaces) Metro is as DEAD AS A DODO.

Cheers

In a sense, in app adds are how you get things for free. They have to exist for app developers to give you your free copy of angry birds or cut the rope.

I don't know of any apps for other platforms that you pay for and still have to deal with adds in. That's sort of been the point. You pay for the app, so you don't have to look at the adds. It makes sense.

It's also standard practice for every other platform, so I don't really see why we're on MS's case for it.

There's a couple different ways.

You can pin them to the Watchlist and have a little column view. Or, you can just pin them to the Start Screen and the live tiles automatically update.

If you have multiple monitors, you can literally have a whole screen of app tiles of different stocks to view with current trading values.

Doesn't work without switching windows which ISN't what you want to do. The tiles are too tiny to be anything useful -- and if I've got a nice 60 inch screen why should I even bother with the tiles.

My current XP application gives me all the trading positions I need in in real time in as many or as few windows that I need to open. and they are all on the same screen so I can compare my trading open positions easily. You really do need to be able to see data from diffrent windows ON THE SAME SCREEN and not as tiny metro tiles.

It "fortunately" still works on W7 but these are sorts of apps REAL USERS want and need. --Keep Metro for smartphones etc where it belongs.

If I want to use a smartphone I'll use one --but a computer with a HUGE screen is NOT an overblown tablet or smart phone.

I still feel that the Metro defenders havn't addressed the basic question -- it's not how many individual windows you can switch to but how many you can have open CONCURRENTLY on the SAME monitor (or on multiple monitors if you must).

SWITCHING BETWEEN WINDOWS is NOT what I'm asking about.

Cheers

On the bright side, if MS continues to be really poor at creating useful apps, an app developer will be sure to fill that void. And if you still don't want to buy it, that's ok too! Because you'll still have a desktop :)

This is just my little tangent, but personally, I can't wait for a useable music app for metro. I haven't used iTunes since I learned that downloads from Amazon aren't crowded with crappy DRM, but I might consider using an ITunes app. Apple definitely knows what its doing when it comes to music browsing. Microsoft hasn't really had an alternative that worked better for casual users when it comes to organizing, ripping, and editing music.

Jimbo,

You're talking about a limitation of the basic Microsoft financial app. There will be other apps with greater ability in them as time goes on. I'm also not in agreement with you about metro not having any business use. Lots of people use iPads and iPhones for business purposes, and this is really no different.

It won't be different on a win8 TABLET but it is 100% different on a desktop workstation... It would be like iPads iOS completely taking over OSX as the primary interface. I don't know ANY Mac users that think that's a good idea :(

And it doesn't matter how good the metro apps are, you can only have 1 maybe 2 at once side by side. A FAR cry from the 4-6 large apps plus a half dozen other smaller but still larger than tile sized apps you can have open side by side on your typical dual monitor workstation.

You wouldn't use the Metro app to do it, or at least that limited version of the metro app. That is why you also have the desktop where you can run your normal apps.

People need to realize that Windows 8 is designed for 2 entirely different systems (PC's and Tablets). Metro is geared more for the tablet crowd, and just happens to be the start screen for the PC crowd. Just because Metro is there, doesn't mean you should be doing everything on Metro..you need to use whichever method is most suitable.

That's certainly true for Metro, but there's nothing stopping you from running all those apps on your windows 8 Desktop, same as you would in 7. Granted, that's not much of a reason to go out and buy windows 8, but windows 8 won't stop you working the same way you did in windows 7 when it starts coming preloaded on your OEM machines. And since you've got a dual monitor workstation, you can have your desktop open on one, and run any metro apps (snapped side by side, if you like) on the other. It really just amounts to more ways of doing things, not fewer.

Jimbo,

I more or less find metro apps dumb as hell on a desktop/laptop. Live tiles don't interest me, it's like widgets. Which in previous versions of Windows were always the first thing to shut off.

Snapping metro apps to a monitor and getting only the ability to have 1 on the right and 1 on the left and 2 sizes to pick from to me is just plain unusable.

I would agree if the metro environment were /secondary/ to the desktop environment, but it's not. The desktop is secondary and it suffers a lot because of it as has been discussed to death already.

I wouldn't mind running a metro app now and then at /severely/ reduced screen real estate ON my desktop, or having a few live tiles down the side of my secondary monitor.. but you can't so it's completely unlikely I'll find /any/ single metro app so worthy as to let it take over an entire monitor :) (Well unless like all of photoshop is crammed into the metro interface since I generally run that full screen, though not always!)

I would agree if the metro environment were /secondary/ to the desktop environment, but it's not. The desktop is secondary and it suffers a lot because of it as has been discussed to death already.

I've been wondering about this recently, actually. I mean, I use a few different metro apps at different times. For work, I always use the desktop. But if I'm browsing the internet, reading the news, or casually checking my e-mail, I use apps. Thing is, my apps crash or shut down all the time. I'll try to run three at once and two out of the three will just hyork out. The desktop never does though.

I know it looks like the desktop is secondary -- they're trying to get us to consume all of our information through metro by pre-loading live tiles right where we'll see them, but those tiles could just as well be desktop programs.

But metro apps are unstable, and the desktop is not. If you run a process on the desktop (like downloading something, or copying files onto a memory stick), and then switch to metro, your desktop will still keep running. But if I run a bunch of apps, say I want to run the music app in the background, they'll all hyork. Again, the desktop will keep running.

All of this makes me think that Metro is really just a skin, mounted on top of the desktop. If enough people loath the destkop, I think Microsoft eventually will let you run a few metro apps on one screen (an excellent idea, by the way). But a few alterations to the start screen and a few apps pinned to your taskbar could easily reduce the feeling that the desktop is secondary, I think.

Yes , it similar to that.

I have removed it from my pe build.

With the previous relesase - particularly the Developer Preview - dumping metro left you witth everything else intact.

MS didn't want to let us do that.

So, they have ripped some code out of explorer.exe so a couple of things like taskbar pin don't work without the metro explorer process running.

Apart from one or two little things like that - it is the full blown o/s.
