W8.1 crashing to black or white screen w/ buzz noise

I've been using this win8.1 desktop for about 20 months, and in recent weeks it has been crashing with two things usually happening:
1) a constant buzz sound over the speakers
2) a black screen, or once in a while a white screen.

I never get the blue screen of death in these crashes.

I then hit cntrl-alt-del and do a reboot and everything works fine until the next episode.

I suspect it's associated w/ the win media system, but I don't really know that.

There should be an event log that shows what was leading up to this, right?
If I can get directions to accessing it (or activating it if it's not already) I'll post it so maybe we can determine what's causing these crashes.

Can you give us more info? Remember, when trying to fix a computer issue like this there is no such thing as too much info.

Can you reproduce it reliably? Or is it random? Does it seem to happen more when using certain programs, doing certain things on it? If you can reproduce it, please tell us the steps you use to do so. If its software related, please give us the name of the software you use when this happens. Also updating your system info/posting your system config will help us a lot as well.
