My computer is running 8.1

It has a 32GB SSD with a wee bit over 4GB free.

Will that cause problems upgrading to Windows 10?

Yes it will as the upgrade installation leaves a Windows.old folder which in itself will be over 20GB. You'd need a bigger SSD really.

Can the .old folder be dumped without causing problems?

Once you get to 10 you can delete the .old folder via normal disk cleanup routine. Doing that however removes your way back to 8.1 if things donlt work out. If you only have 4gb free now then I don't think you have enough space to upgrade successfully.

Thanx

So, I have instruction on creating a Windows 10 media install, I am assuming on a memory key.

That should allow me to upgrade to Windows 10 on that device...right?

I don't think it will allow it. If you only have 4 or 5 gb free then the upgrade needs more space than that to run. The W10 installation files might be separate (just as they are with a normal Windows install DVD) but they still have to be unpacked and end up on the main drive alongside the existing install as it all progresses.

So, I uninstalled nearly everything off the tablet (this is an Irulu 10.1" tablet) including the Office 365 that came with it. I also disabled the hybrid mode. I was able to squeeze a wee bit above 12GB of free space.

It looks like it is updating to Windows 10. It successfully download the update and it rebooted and now it's on the Upgrading Windows screen at 3%. I'm crossing my fingers that the upgrade will work.

I am surprised it did not require me to plug my tablet into the AC plug before the update, though I have about 4 hours of battery remaining, should be plenty.

Update: It completed the update and left me with 6GB of free space.

Interesting. Before the update all the drivers were installed properly and everything worked on the tablet including the auto-screen rotate. BUT, the Bluetooth on the tablet never worked. AFTER the Windows 10 update, there is one driver that is banged out and the screen-auto rotate is no longer working BUT the Bluetooth now works. Give up one, gain another.

I'll have to work on the screen auto-rotate problem.

But, it's installed.

I'm pleased you have got it to update to W10 although I have no idea on your screen rotate problem. Chances are, if its happened to you then it will have happened to others using the same device. Keep checking and searching for any fixes/drivers etc

I don't really know the space requirements, but do know it would probably be well over 4gb. My image of C took almost 23gb. So, if my update to 10 goes SNAFU, I can restore 8.1 and all my programs/settings.

22gb is about the size of all my Windows 8.1 images, I've ever made, too. This is w/o any personal files, just the OS and installed programs. As the orig poster found out, installing from the ISO will also create the .old folder so the space must be available on the device for that folder, no matter how Win10 install is initiated. Must be smaller on his tablet.
