Hi guys,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 (7548) which has i7-5500U, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7 M265 4GB.

Problem I'm having is that the laptop is laggy and sometimes freezes.

I've noticed the disk usage sits at 100% most of the time.

I've just upgraded it to windows 10 in the hope that windows 8 was causing the issue but it has stayed the same.

Any help with this (as it makes the laptop slower than my 5 year old laptop which I replaced) would be greatly receieved!

Thanks!

Is it a spinner HD or SSD?

Thanks for the reply.

A spinner - 1TB Hard Drive. I was looking to upgrade and get a 256gb SSD, would that solve it or is it software related?

I had a similar problem in Windows Vista. If you have Media File Sharing enabled Windows Media Player can constantly scan your drive looking for media files to share. But other things can cause it also. But I would try to solve the problem before moving to SSD. Even though SSD is faster it still interferes with smooth running of the system if some program is trying to monopolize resources.

First though I would look in network settings for a checkbox or radio button with "allow Windows Media Player to share media files" or something similar.

That happened to me when my hard drive was failing. Can you do a SMART check and see the hard drive status to make sure its not a hardware issue? There are several apps you can use for this phrpose. Speccy is one. The smart status is under the hard drive section.

Thanks for the reply.

I recently ran a Dell diagnostic on the HDD and it passed. I'll try the Speccy app and see what it comes back with, cheers.

I know a HDD could fail at any time but I've only had the laptop a few months and its had very limited use in that time.

No problem and yes you are probably right but it's still worth checking. Meanwhile you can check disabling BITS and Windows Search services and see if that helps (services.msc)
