Intel Management Engine Interface for 64-bit Windows

has anybody really determined if this can be uninstalled and/or seriously needed. I use my computer essentially for browsing internet and playing Games..

Do I really need Intel sending information about my computer over the internet and why keep this installed?

I can update my intel with their auto Update program if it's just for that..

Aren't there thousands of people that don't have Intel Management installed and should they install it?

thanks.

I always install it, because I was under the impression it has better drivers for my AHCI controllers.

ha. ok so when I unisntall it, it uninstalls my AHCI drivers too?

well.. i just feel funny about it.. Like I can just use the Intel Auto-Update for my drivers but you may be on to something..

I don't feel funny about it at all. It's a legitimate app right from Intel. I also don't worry about driver updates, because I do those myself for the entire system.

As for AHCI, I was under the impression it replaced the default Microsoft ones with Intel ones that perform better.

I see, ok well I was just thinking its just another way for intel to get some kind of info off of the way we use our computers and send info back via internet.. that was my funny feeling about it. thats all.

but if it speeds up my system - ill install it when i reinstall..

I also was just thinking I have a Lenovo and They are the ones who have it installed, otherwise I probably never would have even thought about it..

perhaps ill write to Toms Hardware and ask them to do a comparison with and without intel management on computers.. that would be a nice article yeah?

tanks for responding DeaconFrost

I found quite a bit of info, but all from a few years ago. I remember doing the comparison myself with a Crucial SSD a few years ago, and remember the difference being small, but showing in favor of the Intel drivers. Next time I rebuild a system, I'll run some benchmarks before and after installing the Intel software.

I've always looked at it as the built-in driver is meant for compatibility, where as the Intel ones are specific for my chipset, offering better performance.

I always install it, because I was under the impression it has better drivers for my AHCI controllers.

The Intel ME firmware is stored with your BIOS on the BIOS ROM. The driver gives you access to the Intel ME system if your processor supports it.

AHCI isn't related, and the drivers can be acquired separately. Although the management engine allows monitoring of storage devices, I don't think this has anything to do with Windows drivers. Maybe it somehow assists with "Intel Smart Response Technology".

The Intel Management Engine firmware and driver helps with overclocking your system from within the OS. It also allows you to read and modify the BCLK interval among other settings.

If you have a 7 series chipset, you absolutely should have the driver installed as it is crucial to the system running properly.

You'll also have a service called "heciserver.exe" running, Despite it being named something which vaguely references "licensing", it's a controller for/watchdog for something important on the chipset. Series 8 and above have this built into the hardware. (Sorry for the lack on info here, this is what I read from a post made by an intel employee somewhere. If I can find the source, i'll edit it in.)

Finally, no matter what you choose to do, you must absolutely update the intel ME firmware which resides on the BIOS chip on your motherboard if it isn't already updated. There are security risks from not updating. which is a risk independent of any operating system. (firmware rootkit...yikes!) Or so I've read.

yeah great.. well apparently Intel just being a big company full of ways to force you to install something..

If it was soooo "important" then they should just have it built in and not be something you can even "uninstall" .. that's what really pisses me off..

I'm sure it's a monitoring system of sorts yes, but O have such a huge feeling they are just using it to help them send information of how I use my computer.. sure it can be for good use but they can do that on systems and people who have "agreed" to want to do that kind of thing..

Im sure this sounds a little ridiculous but if it's something you can uninstall.. then it's something not imperative to system operation..

and I do appreciate all the response.. and I've googled it as well and can't find anything but "old" outdated" information.. nobody including Intel! tries to really explain what the heck this is and why it's only on some computers and this and that..

I still don't understand the fear of it, or why you seem to jump to paranoia right off the bat.

If the drivers were built-in, they wouldn't have compatibility with later chipsets. Then you'd have people complaining about issues with the OS out of the box. You want to have these components added later, so the best versions can be installed. Besides, what if you were running a non-Intel budget system? Would you want it slowed down even more with irrelevant drivers?

I don't like making assumptions, but it sounds like you are getting misinformation from some source that's filling your mind with things to worry about (that don't need worrying about). Take some time to understand how the OS works in relation to hardware, and you'll see why you want to have drivers and why you want to have them from the proper sources. Intel knows their hardware better than anyone else, even Microsoft, so they should be the ones providing you with proper drivers. Each chipset is different, so you want the ability to install what is needed for your system, and not what's needed for every system in existence. For example, my computer is different than yours. I want the best software and drivers for my system...not for yours or for my neighbors, etc. That's why so many of us are avid members of the PC club. We can customize and build ours systems to suit our needs. You don't get that option with Apple.

As long as you get your drivers from legit sources, such as Intel or your mobo maker, there's nothing you need to worry about. Keep your system free of malware, take off the tin foil hat, and enjoy using your computer for the purposes you need to use it for!

well the funny thing is that's what ended up happening.. I am just going to be using the intel management.. I got paranoid from seeing things like Intel Remote management engine and things like Intel sending information this and that.. and well yeah I can't really do anything about it anyway.. but that's where my paranoia came from.. the "remote" stuff..

all in all, i am going to just use the "best" drivers as you say from intel and move on..

but the things that my firewall is blocking is another story.. haha you should see the amount of stuff microsoft has always trying to check this and that..haha. but thats just another one of my paranoia things..

I'm going to have to let it all go.. especially when Windows 10 comes out.. I know they put everything they had in their arsenal to do whatever they want. like Marketing stuff like what google does.. and they do have every right to do so.. as they made the products I'm using.. so i do understand that..
