Windows 8.1 due to expire, error code 0xC004F074

I bought a PC last year with Windows 8 already installed. I took advantage of the 8.1 upgrade and entered the code I had. I was fairly certain it had activated it. It seems not. I've only been getting these messages since Friday. It tells me my 8.1 will expire on August 2nd. I have tried the activation Key I was originally given and that doesn't work at all now.
I've checked the system page and it says Windows edition 8.1, at the bottom it says it's not activated. There is a Product ID of five letters/numbers in the groups then one of four.
Yet, setting winver into run it says that my product IS licensed. So, what is going on please. I'd greatly appreciate any help in sorting this out.
I am running on AMD A8-6500 3.50 GHz, with 8 GB RAM and 64bit OS - if you need this information, that is.

By 'upgrade' you meant you installed the "FREE" update to Windows 8.1 from Windows Store, right? You actually wouldn't be needing the Key at all in the first place if your PC came with a pre-installed copy of Windows 8, which of course would be activated. Since, Windows 8.1 was just like any normal update which took a bit more time.

Apparently, the old Windows 8 key was rejected by the upgrade(it could happen after a while too...personal experience on my Asus netbook).

    Did you try these first?

    - Closing explorer.exe from Task Manager. Then running, "slmgr -rearm" in COMMAND(as admin) opened from task manager itself. (New Task)

    - slmgr.vbs -ipk "<the key>"

If that didn't work, you can always call your PC manufacturer for assistance. They'll walk you through the Trouble-shooting. Good Luck.
