Be careful with the Refresh Feature, read up on it and understand exactly what it will do. If your system started with W-8 and you upgraded to 8.1 via Windows Store a Refresh could try to take you back to W-8 if it works at all.

Restore is a rather harmless/benign Recovery Tool but if any problem existed at the time the Recovery Point was made it will exist upon Restore and a Restore will not necessarily remedy all situations.

Refreshing reinstall Windows and keeps your personal files and settings. It also keeps your apps .
Restoring is a way to undo recent system changes you’ve made.

No they are not the same. The terms do get used incorrectly at times.

System restore will return your system to an earlier point without effecting personal files.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4692-system-restore-how-do-windows-8-a.html

Reset is like starting fresh, everything is set to defaults and all programs and files will need to be reinstalled.

Refresh is similar to system restore but a bit more destructive,

Don't start any more threads for the same subject, I already merged two of your other ones.

My way---

1---If my computer gets REALLY messed up I get out my set of factory recovery DVDs & restore it to factory specs.

2--- Having done that, I reinstall Macrium Reflect Standard version {V5} & create a boot time recovery environment & use my GOOD image of my system with 8.1 Pro on it to reinstall with.
Usually the Reflect image is good enough.
No need to use the factory disks.

Note that in #1 I said REALLY...

Back up things when things are working good.

It is my understanding that reset puts the machine software back to the way it was out of the box. Refresh saves Apps but not Desktop Programs. Unless you have an issue that will only be fixed that way I would not use either.

They are pretty much optios for a system that is hosed and cannot be fixed by stuff like sfc /scannow or updating drivers or reloading the registry from a backup.

What is the issue that makes you want to go with these options?

I think on one of the pages where I got a hit for that error number, the person said uninstalling Avast allowed it to complete. I think it is worth a try. Especially trying to do system stuff AV gets in the way. The other things I found all referred to installing .NET framework. I suppose it could be either but the first things I do when trying to get my system going are turn off AV and Firewalls.

Once you are up and running if you want to reactivate that's up to you. :)

The same thing happened to me a month ago. This fixed it, uninstalling a patch which is related to pending Windows 10 system diagnostics.Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ran fine and next scannow came back clean again -

You're getting error 0x800f0906 because you have KB3022345 installed. Uninstall it by going to Programs and Features in Control Panel and then click the link to "View installed updates". In the Search box top right, copy/paste (or type) KB3022345 and when it appears in the list, right click it and choose Uninstall.

See these two articles for more info on the subject: Microsoft confirms patch KB3022345 breaks SFC /scannow
