Solved Frequent prompts for password?

My mother is running Windows 8.1 on her new ASUS laptop. She's retired and it's common for her to get up periodically to check on something in the kitchen. When she comes back to the computer, it prompts her for the password so that she can verify her identity. She struggles with typing the password due to her lack of keyboarding knowledge and the mixed-case nature of the password and I could help with that by changing the password but I'm trying to understand why she is being prompted for the password in the first place.

I assumed that the screen saver was kicking in and forcing her to login in again after an absence of a few minutes but when I checked her screen saver settings, I found that she doesn't have one; the timeout interval is greyed out and the checkbox that asks for the login screen to be shown after that interval is unchecked so the screensaver is clearly not the culprit.

What else would cause Windows to prompt her for the password (other than a reboot)? I'd like to stop Windows from prompting her for her password or, if that is not possible, would like to extend the timeout interval from whatever it is now - two or three minutes maybe? - to something like 15 or 30 minutes.

I *think* many of the questions to which I've answered "not sure" are irrelevant because it is a laptop but if you need to know specifically what model of cooling fans or keyboard or whatever where built in to the laptop, I can try to find that out if you tell me where to look. I don't see this information in the Windows/System display but maybe it is elsewhere. I'm not sure what a "PSU" is: Powe
Its possible that it could be a virus or some type of malware. I would run a scan on it with Malwarebyes AntiMalware and then use Comodo Antivirus or Comodo Internet Security to run a virus scan. How long has she had the machine?

Thanks for the suggestion.

She has only had this computer five or six weeks now.

Still possible, though unlikely that it is malware. I would do all of what I suggested just to be safe. If that turns up nothing, then I would start to wonder if there is a program on her computer thats trying to access a website, a network resource or some protected area of the drive. Also look under User Accounts and then Change User Account Control Settings in the Control Panel. Make sure the setting is one tick below the top most and not the top most setting. The second tick is where it should be by default.

How would I determine that a program on her computer is trying to access a website, network resource or protected area of her drive?

I will check the other settings you've suggested; I see that my own account is set to the second highest notch but if hers has somehow moved to the highest notch, that might explain the problem.

I actually tried to watch the problem happen via TeamViewer but couldn't replicate it. We watched for something like 15 minutes but she was not prompted for the password. Either she touched the touchpad against my instructions, the timeout is higher than she thinks or TeamViewer itself was sufficiently active that the code the code that is prompted for the password after idlenesss didn't think the computer was idle.

That is what would make me check for viruses and malware. Unless she downloaded something onto her computer that is doing it. See if she downloaded any new programs that could be doing it. Otherwise do the check for viruses and malware.

It's not very likely that she downloaded something on her own but I'll ask her about that anyway. She's 88 and has only been using a computer for the past 4 years. She can't type and has only a very basic idea of what she is doing. She does her banking online, surfs the web occasionally, and plays games on it. I doubt she has a clear idea how to find, let alone install a program, although she has seen me do it a few times, in person and via Team Viewer. Still, it's possible she inadvertently clicked on something, like an ad, and installed something without meaning too....

It isn't just the screen saver setting. It is an option in the power settings for the particular power profile. I don't use a screen saver, but after 20 minutes (my setting), the screen goes off and requires me to log in again. Check under Power Profiles. Here is mine:

That could easily be the whole issue. It just didnt cross my mind to look into that. Oh well, at least someone else came up with it. :)

Sorry for the long delay in following up but the problem with the frequent password prompts has been solved. It was the Windows settings for power management that needed changing. They've been changed to something appropriate for my mother now.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions!
