Solved Windows 8.1 start button menu

Turned my laptop on today and the above right click menu has gone. All other right click menus ok.

Button changes when clicked but nothing happens, I shut the computer down yesterday using the right click menu and all was OK.

Help.

Windows 8.1 start button changes to what exactly when clicked and nothing happens ? Any system restore points before this happened, if so go back to one see if it resolves it. How where you able to shutdown the laptop, from the Metro start screen ?

Added any software, drivers or hardware recently ?

Why don't you also try to run System File checker, go to the metro start screen, click all apps, right click the Command Prompt and copy paste this and press enter

sfc /scannow

Same command prompt copy and paste this and press enter

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

When mouse over button it changes from a translucent background to a black background. Right clicking the button changes the screen background {the bit that can be seen behind the tabs from my set colour to white).

I shut down and am presently using the shutdown button on the screen which come up when left clicking the start button.

Nothing added or removed, since it was working OK.

Didn't say tried SFC or DISM, try those too. Any restore points made before this happened ? Drivers for video card and other hardware and Windows up to date ?

Went back to the earliest Restore point I could find and using this has cured the fault.

Good to know, still not sure what caused this to happen. Monitor it for awhile, do not delete any restore points yet. Not sure was due to any software,drivers or windows updates you had done after this restore point. You can still run System file checker and DISM from post # 2, see if any corruption and to restore health, reboot after. Should be updated to Windows 8.1 as soon going loose the opportunity of this update.
