I hear this is a common problem with pointers on Windows 8.1

Can someone please help me solve this issue because it is soooo frustrating.

Thanks:(

We need more information than that. What do you mean it keeps missing? what are you doing when this happens? Remember, there is no such thing as too much information.

Well it disappears quit a bit. I keep having to hit the touch pad to try and get it to show itself. Also it gets stuck in one place and I cannot move it. It is frustrating. Thanks

That still is not enough info. We need to know what you are doing when it happens. Are you using Microsoft Word, Excel, YouTube, VLC Player, etc? All of those will make the mouse pointer disappear when it is left in one spot for an amount of time. The stuck in one place may be due to an issue with the trackpad itself, or your power setting that have to do with it. It could be a driver as well. I would reccomend looking up your laptop model on the manufacturers website and downloading the corresponding driver for the trackpad. Sometimes if the proper driver isnt installed it will not track correctly.

I am just on the internet when it does that. I know it disappears with streaming and watching a movie. All I am doing is browsing the internet when that happens.

Did the laptop come with Windows 8.1 or did you upgrade?

Have you tried installing the latest Synaptics touchpad driver from HP or uninstalling the touchpad driver, rebooting then let Windows rediscover the touchpad and reload the driver?

You didn't answer my question: Did the laptop come with Windows 8.1 or did you upgrade?

Also, do you have everything backed up or at least any data you don't want to lose. Best would be an image backup using Macrium Reflect Free to an external USB hard drive.

Since you can boot normally, I'd suggest doing a Repair Install using Windows 8.1 media downloaded from Microsoft. It will use the Windows 8 install key embedded in your BIOS and activate just fine.

See here: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

The updated Option One shows you how to use a Microsoft provided tool (mediacreationtool.exe) to download any version of 8.1 for either 32 or 64 bit, regardless of what computer (bit wise) you are running from. Make sure you get the one that matches what you have.

Mediacreationtool must be run from a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 computer.

Next, do a Repair Install: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

This will not touch your data but you will have to reinstall some of your programs. Still best to have a good image backup just in case something goes wrong.

Well I had to do a factory reset because not just the pointer was having issues when I did a sf/scannow I had tons of corrupted files that could not be fixed.. So when I did the factory reset guess what the pointer still freezes all the time and the files are corrupted. No offense but I prefer a better OS. They want us to go to windows 10 when 8.1 has issues I cannot imagine windows 10. YIKES!! I will have to send the laptop into HP.

I believe your laptop is a touch screen. If you don't often use the touch feature for anything then try cleaning the screen with a microfiber cloth. If the screen is very dirty, lightly dampen the cloth with a mixture of 1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 part white vinegar, and 2 parts warm water.

Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 all stop displaying the mouse cursor when it detects touch input. Which could be the problem. The only other problem could be the mouse settings. Check your synaptic settings (found in control panel) for any options to hide cursor, or timeouts for the cursor.

Also you may want to have a look at the Windows mouse settings found in control panel. (I use a dark theme)

Maybe the touchpad ribbon cable is coming loose or is damaged. Could also be a really bad malware infection eating up system resources. You said you had corrupted files. Maybe there's something causing problems.

Try checking for malware.
