Some images on my laptop I can no longer open with Windows Photo Viewer. The images also wont open in Paint. They opened fine before and I've done nothing to them.

What are the file extensions? What happens when you try to open them? Have you copied them to another computer and tried opening them?

They are JPEG files. When I try to open them in Photo Viewer I get "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either photo viewer doesn't support this file format or you don't have the latest updates to photo viewer". When I open in Paint I get "Paint can not read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or it's format is not currently supported".

I have not tried to open them on another computer. I will try that asap. Thanks

That should tell you if the files are corrupt or if there's something wrong with the original computer, in terms of it's ability to open a .jpg file.

Does the same thing on my wife's laptop. For example, the image I tried use to open on my laptop fine. It's like every once in awhile, my laptop decides to corrupt a few files.

Could be due to filesystem corruption. Open a elevated command prompt and type chkdsk C: /r and let it do its thing. It might ask you to restart the PC. If it does, restart it and let it go through the checks. This will repair any file system problems there might be. I might also be tempted to run sfc /scannow to see if there are any problems with the system files.

Thanks for the help. I done both scans. No errors and images still do not open. Let me know what suggest trying next.

Does anyone have anymore suggestions?

I would try copying an image from your wife's machine onto a usb and see if it opens ok on your machine. If so then copy it to the HD on your machine and see if it "stays good" for a few hours/days. If at a loss the best general technique is divide and conquer. Try tests that determine which side the problem is on be it hardware/software data/executable if software etc..

Process of elimination may take awhile but unless you have a good clue to the cause it may be the only way to go. :thumb:

Following up on Miles' response, I would use another image viewer to see if it's the fault of the picture. XNView is a free image viewer. There are others.

I tried XNView and it does not work with it either.

I tried to open one of the images on another computer. Same problem, so I'm guessing it must be something my computer is doing to the image to corrupt it?

That is why I suggested copying a file from another source to a USB stick and opening it on your PC. If it opens ok then copy it to the HD and see how it opens from there. If it opens from the HD ok try it again after a day and see if it is still ok. The point being to see where the file is getting munged, if that is what is happening.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. I will try that.

The particular steps aren't important. It's just to try to eliminate 1/2 the possibilities on each experiment.
