I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago -- and it turned out that filesystem corruption was the problem. I had to recover the pictures from a backup I had saved. While folks have claimed to be able to "fix" corrupted picture files, I have not had such success.

As to the Windows 10 forums, it's been around for quite a while: Windows 10 Forums

Restore the ones you can't open from a backup or give Shadow Explorer a try, see if any shadow copies of the files exist. If yes you can recover them that way.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried accessing any of the photos in question with another viewer? For the files that windows photo viewer show as empty, do they also show empty when you highlight and check properties for that file?

file system corruption what is that?so whta can i do?

In my case, it happened because I dual-boot with Win10TP and, with this last upgrade, forgot to turn OFF the FastStartup option in Win10. That resulted in my shared data drive being hibernated, and that resulted in filesystem corruption.

You can try running chkdsk /r, see if that repairs the files. If not, try Shadow Explorer or restore from a backup.

You do have a backup, right? If not, this problem should convince you to setup a regular backup strategy.

If the external drive dies, so does all your images. You need to think about some kind of backup, maybe another exrternal drive.
