Hi there
I think others posted before about this issue on W8 CP but still not fixed in RP.

The supplied Metro apps won't open on a lot of netbooks because the screen resolution apparently is TOO LOW so What's up !!!???.

If I can run PHOTOSHOP without having to plug in an external monitor surely a STOOPID app like Weather or Stock market stock price should work !!!.

The Netbook has a resolution of 1024 x 600. Fine for purposes when I'm travelling on a plane / train etc -- don't need a HUGE 17 inch screen for these types of situations.

However seems metro needs 1024 X 768 as a minimum.

I think MS have just scored an "Own Goal" here -- a lot of tablets will fall under the minimum resolution -- as well as most phones. !!

Cheers

Well, since I installed Developer's Preview to the netbooks of at least two of my mates, I was a bit puzzled that the Metro apps won't open when they would on my Desktop. It was later that I realized that they have this minimum resolution requirement.

I don't find it very easy to understand why they made this cause that would rule out netbooks WITH LESS THAN 1024 X 768 resolution from the Metro environment which they are trying to push through right now to most platforms and in that point, Metro becomes even more of a bugger hindrance if you are using such netbooks because it makes no point for netbooks like that.

Win 8 is junk, yuck! I feel boxed in with the OS, less freedom. Don't seem to have as much control of my system as with previous Windows versions. I want my desktop to be a priority and have easy access to all files and folders. I clicked on the photo app and the fact that I couldn't easily modify the description of photos was enough to turn me off.
Windows 8 isn't for gamers, graphic designers or my line of work, 3D scan, design and CNC. I don't draw on a touch screen or game on a touch screen and I wouldn't consider installing this on my work computer OR my home PC. My work flow would come to a screeching halt.
I will be keeping Win 7 for a long time.

Wow, that deserves a gaping forehead slap for sure. Holy smokes. If this is supposed to be one OS on all devices they should have allowed down to AT LEAST 640x400...

Once you get a little more accustomed to Win8, believe me you will be zipping back and forth easily. Try this when you feel "boxed in" :

- press Alt-Tab
- when in Desktop, hover mouse pointer to bottom left corner to switch to Start screen
- when in Start screen, hover mouse pointer to bottom left corner to switch to Desktop
- when in a Metro app, hover mouse pointer to top left corner to switrch to Desktop
- press Alt-F4 to exit any Metro or standard app and return to Start or Desktop respectively
- press Alt-F4 from Desktop to initiate shutdown or restart
- press Win-R from Start or Desktop to run an app
- press Win-W at any time to do a search
- press Win key to show the Start screen
- press Win-i at any time to get to Start screen settings

There's a lot more. I think it's actually a very good OS so far from what I have seen. I am sure for the enterprise/server versions of this, they will not be using "metro" though.

I use those keyboard shortcuts too because no other easy options are available. But that is not my idea of a modern OS. Sounds more like Windows 3.1.

Huh? Those ARE easy options. Reference to Win 3.1, lol.

How do you know this? If you could provide a link for reference, I would be interested to read more on that.

This surely cannot be the case as MS will get screwed over this (and rightly so). More investigation required???:(

Hi there
just try it and see. My Aspire 1 netbook has a native resolution of 1024 X 600 -- fine as I've said when I'm on a train etc -- the 10 inch screen is just about large enough for me to use EXCEL etc with a minimized ribbon. But you CAN'T run metro. Can't take a SNIP as you can't Multi window metro and non metro apps.

Try it on your own computer --set your resolution to something equal or below 1024 X 600 and then attempt to get into a metro app.

Cheers

the resolution requirement makes perfect sense. That's the minimum resolution target that developers will aim for, which allows them to lay out their application's interface without being constrained. I'm sure you've even seen in Windows 7, that certain applications are virtually unusable on very small screens. There are a few applications which have a fixed high greater than 600pixels, and do not show up correctly on smaller screens.

Jimbo, I've had Windows 8 running on an old Netbook for months. Metro works fine, all you have to do is make sure you've got the correct chipset drivers for your Netbook. Just go to Google and type in "installing Windows 8 on a Netbook" you'll find all the info you need to hack the registry to set a higher resolution for your Netbook. Its pretty simple, I'd give you a link but I don't like giving people advise anymore in case something goes wrong.

Hi there
OK I'll buy the fact that some applications need a larger size than 1024 X 600 but surely NOT ALL and by no means the majority either.
What about mobile phone apps

and as I said before if I can run photoshop on the netbook I should be able to run most of those "supplied" metro apps.

I can remember doing some quite complex graphical CAD stuff on old VGA screens years ago -- 640 * 480 !!!.

If you look at Android ICS (The guys who dream up these names must be bonkers anyway -- Ice Cream Sandwich) the resolution just seamlessly changes as you slide your fingers over the smart phone screen --stretching or pinching the display.

If W8 is a serious smart phone OS contender then they've got a lot to learn.

Android has become something from a kiddies toy or a joke to actually a half way decent OS in the latest release and with Google's resources it can only get better from here on in.

Windows Phone 8 will share kernel code with Windows 8 and Windows RT, but it's still being built for a different type of device. Issues with resolution on Windows 8 shouldn't be present in Windows Phone 8. Furthermore, most newer netbooks have 1366x768. My wife's Aspire One (AO722) certainly does. The tablets that we've had previews of, which run Windows RT also are in the 10-12" range (which is really where most tablets are), and have at least the minimum resolution. I don't see the issue here.

Not to mention that the Snap feature didn't work on my laptop. Windows 8 is pathetic. I'm sticking with Windows 7 and Vista (on one pc) I like the desktop. I hope Microsoft does well with Windows 9.

Read an(other) article today in a PC Mag and as far as the writer was concerned Win8 is complimentary to Win7 and not a replacement. They see it for the phone and tablet markets - just maybe they've got a point and all us desktop/laptop users should simply stay as we are.

That's pretty well the way I'm seeing it too. I've been using it as the main OS on my desktop but there is nothing in it that makes me want to pony up the bucks and upgrade from Windows 7. Improvements aside, for me its not any easier to use on my desktop or laptop. However, if I were to buy a new windows tablet with Windows 8 pre-installed, I think I could live with it, and "might" actually warm up to it more.

I do prefer windows 8 as it is faster than 7. I just read an article saying that they wanted to make windows 8 more user-friendly. That's probably why business wouldn't upgrade. I mean besides the fact that they JUST upgraded and they would probably wait until 9 or 10 since upgrade would mean a lot of money being used again. But also because at this point they have actually made it more difficult to use and overall it would be a bit of a departure for windows 7 users. While some functions remain intact there are certain things that would inevitably be new to users and would not be as easy to learn. But the reason would probably be more for the fact that business JUST upgraded so it would be pointless unless there was a huge advantage with windows 8 while performance wise it is better than windows 7 there isn't anything that makes it a much more marketable product. Unless business people are given a really good business metro app that they can't live without or a really good touch based program of some sort.
