Solved Strange partition with no letter

Hello,

Just a few minutes ago, I decided to defragment my hard drive. The defragment screen pops up and I saw a disk drive that I haven't seen before called "WINRE". I usually only see my main hard disk drive and the recovery partition when I open disk defragmenter. I was wondering what is this drive? My recovery partition is "RECOVERY (D: )" but this drive is just called "WINRE" without any partition letters.

I checked disk management to see if I could identify what this drive is, but it shows two recovery partitions now, both named "RECOVERY (D: )"

I have no idea what happened but right now I'm feeling kind of dubious about this drive.

Can someone help me know what this drive is? or to delete this "WINRE" partition?

Those are Windows Recovery partitions and they should be there and hidden. Please leave them alone and do not delete.

Thank you for the reply.

Is it normal to have 2 recovery partitions? That's because I haven't seen "WINRE" before and I am certain the "RECOVERY (D: )" partition is the "original" partition.

Here are some screenshots:

Yes, The partitions layout from disk management is perfectly correct. The first partition contains Windows Recovery Environment that allows you to boot into safe mode to do any repair if needed. The last partition contains the Factory Image that allows you to reset Windows as if you've just bought the Laptop. There's a function key when pressed at boot time will activate and reset Windows. In addition, there's also another unallocated 128MB MSR partition sitting in between the 2nd & 3rd which disk management does not show.

Normally, Drive D: should also be hidden and should not be used to store any data or mess with. To hide it, from disk management, right click on D: ->Change drive letter and path then click on Remove. To unhide it, do the same and assign a letter.

Thank you for explaining this strange partition topgundcp!

Now I could finally breath a sigh of relief because I thought I did something on the system that I didn't know.

Thanks again!
