As far as I am aware, Microsoft are holding back the final look of the desktop version of Windows 8. That's according to CNet in any case. That said, they've had a lot to take on board the last few months feedback wise. I fear they have listened to very little of what customers are actually telling them.

Who then are Microsoft going to listen to? Their customers, or, the Widows 8 fanbois within Microsoft who are determined to ram this touchy feely one size fits all OS down everyones throats? It seems astonishing that Microsoft has taken the two disasters of Vista and Windows Phone and bundled both of them in to one operating system. Is this short sightedness, ideology or just plain stupidity from Microsoft? Time will tell, but I think it's already starting to look very bad.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, l think that my original statement "http://www.eightforums.com/general-...-biggest-ever-flop-far-bigger-than-vista.html" is still valid. Windows 8 is a tablet OS, no business will bother with it [even Microsoft have admitted that], desktop users seem to overwhelmingly dislike it, and, to cap it all, Apple have already cornered the entire tablet market.

The question then remains, who are Microsoft trying to sell this odd hybrid to? Certainly not me. I've been using Windows 8 on a desktop for months now and it's not been the most fluid experience. When will Microsoft realise, it's not what's under the bonnet I'm unhappy with, it's the user interface on a desktop computer. Still, Microsoft seem to be stone deaf to me as a customer and that is beginning to really annoy me. Microsoft sticking it's head in the sand about such concerns means this OS deserves to fail, and fail spectacularly.

As far as I'm concerned, there is still so much work to be done on Windows 8 to make it worthwhile for your average user to even consider upgrading to it that it's astonishing.

Please Microsoft, just remember this - "I am a PC, not a tablet."

Under the bonnet, Win 8 is a lovely OS.

So all you're worried about is the interface, and you sit here everyday complaining over that. On top of that you want the rest of the world to think the same as you do and Microsoft to bend because you don't like the interface. Wow.
I really hope you get what you want.

he's not alone though is he! the interface is a crucial component to the os, while we know that under the bonnet it works better to actually utilise all of that increased performance we get stuck with a crappy ui that is meant for small hand held devices and overpriced touch screens instead of a keyboard and mouse.

you see i'd be all for going the touch screen route if they were cheaper....a lot cheaper but they aren't are they.

but then there is the consideration of having to reach for your screen all the sodden time, so that means having it so close to you that you can reach it comfortably. but wait, for it to be that close it would have to get in the way of the rest of my desk space and be so close to my eye balls they would end up with eye strain and a huge freaking empty space behind the touchscreen because it had to be moved so close.

do you get why a touch screen os style won't suit the masses on a desktop yet? and you think microsoft got it right and were all just not wanting to accept change? thats not it at all.

I think it does. It's public perception that matters. Once a product gets a bad smell to it, it's over. Windows 8 is more than half way there already. Microsoft got it all wrong with the introduction of Vista and it looks like it's about to happen all over again with Windows 8. That's the parallel.

Me too, and that's what makes it all so annoying. Different devices for different tasks. One OS cannot rule them all.

I can't even understand what you people are talking about. I sit in front of my PC and see a slick new interface and some really slick new Apps and I think wow what a transformation. Then when I want go to my desktop I go click and I'm there back in Windows 7 but a lot faster and slicker. I look at the new travel App and think this is great, the new history App and think I'm on another planet.

But somehow you people see a two headed monster, I'm just not understanding you at all.

Maybe, maybe not, if you believe Tim Cook, not. But I think the guy is an idiot, and I do believe and I do hope Microsoft can pull this off. I really think we'll all be a lot better off if they can, if they can't, forget about Microsoft in the future and start buying Apple shares.

Dont believe for one minute that Apple has got the tablet market cornered, sure its got a big market, but if Micosoft can get Windows 8 on tablets at a reasonable price, I'm absolutely positive that it will grab a huge chunk of the market.
I actually have the latest iPad, its a good little machine, but its a very crippled OS and feels very childlike. When the new Win8 tablets come out at a reasonable price, my iPad will be on Ebay in a flash.

If Apple's iOS looks childlike, then visually speaking Windows Metro is the Fisher Price of operating systems. Okay, Apple has approx. 57.4% market share of tablets sold. Kindle is also well established. Windows Metro is just Windows Phone all over again. They have joined the party far too late to make any significant inroads in to it. Oh, and what is Microsoft Windows Phone worldwide market share again? Ah, yes, 1.9% worldwide. A drop of 27% compared to a year ago. Lookin' good for good 'ol Windows 8 then.

Sorry, but last time I looked Windows phone has 4% of the world market, 6% in Germany and is beating Apple in China at 7% against iPhone 6% with a much later start.
You cant say they're too late to the party, you can never say that, have a look at RIM and Nokia.

I actually think when Apollo comes out you'll see avery large uptake.

The main problem for Microsoft, RIM , Nokia and all other manufacturers is this: Your average punter wants an Apple device, in the west it's a status symbol. Anything else you may care to buy is considered 2nd class by your peers. It's as simple as that. Your average consumer thinks that way. No matter how better another operating system may be it does not interest them, especially if we are talking about the tablet and mobile markets. Apple is a prestige symbol, people aspire to owning Apple products, and, it's a prestige symbol that Microsoft will never achieve, however hard it may try.

WIndows 8 under the bonnet is a good OS. Just give me the option to circumvent the annoying Metro start screen when I'm on a desktop. It doesn't have to be stripped out, just give me the damned option. How difficult can it be for a company to get it's head around that? Pig headed stubbornness from the Microsoft Windows 8 in house fascist fanbois, that's what this all about.

Sorry Deskjet, wrong again, Samsung is beating the iPhone on the world market on its own(by a healthy margin) let alone the rest of Android phones. Also a lot of people are ditching their iPhones, its not the Belle of the Ball it once was.
Android hasnt done too well in the tablet market, and I think this is where Microsoft will shine. I could be totally wrong about all this, but I've seen all this coming for quite sometime and I think Microsoft is on the right track.

They may be ditching their iPhones, however, and let's be honest, they are not ditching them in droves for a Samsung with Windows Phone on it are they. Not in any significant numbers. Make mine a Samsung Ice Cream Sandwich is more like it.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. I'm sure this discussion will continue.
