How to restore default icons of a program

Hello guys.

I have a program called 3ds max 2015 and so every .max file (proper extension of that program) have this icon: Screenshot by Lightshot

Yesterday I installed 3ds max 2013 (a previous version of the program) and when the installation finished, it automatically changed the icon of every .max file from Screenshot by Lightshot to this other one Screenshot by Lightshot
Furthemore, every .max file got openable with 3ds max 2013 and no longer with 3ds max 2015. What a disaster...

So, at this point, I wanted to restore the 3ds max 2015 as default program to open those file and as default icon for those.
I simply right-clicked one of those files and then "Open with...". Here, I've chosen the .exe of 3ds max 2015.

AT THIS POINT, the .max files are now openable with 3ds max 2015 BUT the icons haven't restored! The icons after this process are blank: this because when I chose the 3ds max 2015 .exe, the latter has no icon.

So now, how can I restore the icons for .max files? Please it's important =(

Thanks in advance!

P.S: I've already tried with Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Help Forums but it doesn't work at all

=(

Did you try reinstalling the 2015 version? It should set the file association and icon during the install and keep any settings. But make a restore point before the install just in case.

If reinstalling the 2015 version doesn't work, try using FileTypesMan to assign the default icon for that extension.

If it still doesn't display the icon you want, try clearing the icon cache. In Windows 8, the process to do that is a bit more involved than in previous versions. After deleting the necessary iconcache files, restart and let Windows rebuild the icon database. Hopefully that will give you the icon you need.
