So I took my PC to a PC shop on Monday, and the guy's gonna redo my windows. Originally my PC which is custom built has 7 home prem on it. If I tell him to install 8.1 on it (provided it isn't already too late to, I told him to stick with 7 and haven't talked to the guy since then) would there be a charge for the copy that he bought on my bill as part of the diagnostic fee?

Most likely. It's much the same as taking your car to a repair shop, have to pay for parts used when the repair tech has been given instructions. The main thing to keep in mind is that any OEM version of Windows is tied to/stays with the computer. Any Retail version can be installed on a Replacement computer but has to be removed from the previous computer.

Hi

I would say to not install 8.1 at this time as "Windows 10" is due for release on July 29 and it's a free update to all existing 7 and 8 users.

Here's how Windows 10 upgrade paths will work | PCWorld

Why to pay for 8.1 when you can get "Windows 10 Home" for free ?.

Hmm, you do make a pretty good point there.. I actually had a feeling that somebody was going to say this. I didn't know though that Win 10s official name coming out would be called "Home". Interesting. I might not upgrade right away, I just wanna wait and see what other people are saying about it when they install it on their PC's first I think. I dunno. Are you going to upgrade as soon as it drops on the 29th?

Ah ok thanks. I have been there actually, it's actually a bookmark on my Firefox bookmarks bar. :) Everyone seems pretty jazzed about it it looks like. I think that the whole interface looks pretty spiffy myself, but I'm thinking that I'm going to wait until people make review videos of the released product on YouTube and reviews in the forums before I even consider an upgrade.

Yes, at least on one Desktop and most likely on a Notebook. I have acquired a very nice Dell Desktop with Win7 that is not being used now that I have nothing but some time invested in that will be used. I have a 4-year-old Toshiba Notebook with Win7 that I resurrected with a new HDD that I'll also use.
