How Do I Configure Win 8.1 to Send Fax?

I got Windows 8.1. I want to send and receive a fax. I tried to configure it on Windows Fax and Scan. When I try to set it up, I get a message:

"there are currently no modems installed on this computer. If you want to send and receive faxes using a modem attached to this computer, you need at least one modem installed. Do you want to install a new modem?"

Just to let you know, I got a Sony Vaio Flip 15A. How do I configure it on this laptop?

What ISP are you on? Cable? Fiber Optic? DSL? Depending upon your answer, you may have to purchase a fax/modem like I did for my computer. I use a switch box to alternate between fax/modem [thus receiving and sending faxes] and my regular telly line. Although fax/modem does not use DSL line, Windows operations support either DSL or fax/modem but not both at the same time.

I use myfax.com. They used to have a "Printer" driver, that would take documents and send them to their fax server.

I pay $10/month for it. Fax maybe 5-10 pages, depending on the month.

Yes, Windows Fax & Scan, along with Phone Tools, require a real fax/modem, I have my old USR 56K in place.

To send or receive a fax directly you need a fax modem. Few computers have such a modem anymore. A DSL or cable modem will not work. There are services available that will allow fax over the Internet, free for limited usage.

You can. Because I have to scan stuff in to a couple different places, because of being on disability retirement with the state. I log in to do it. The iOS app is actually really nice to have. You can use a scanner app that uses the phone's camera and send that way.

I went that route, because some days my back hurts so much or every now and then I have dizzy spells, because of an inner ear issue. Which makes me unable to run it out to my wife's work. Plus she is swamped right now. She would kill me if I went out there, to save a buck.

I also handle my mother's estate affairs, so I am able to email an inbound to her, so she can pull it up on her tablet.
