PC freezes after idle/sometimes in games

Hello everyone, let me start off by saying I'm new to all this troubleshooting stuff so even though I built this PC myself, please have patience if I didn't post my specs or something when I needed to.

So, my PC is freezing sometimes (almost once a day, sometimes twice). By freezing, I mean it locks up completely, and moving the mouse doesn't do anything on screen, nor does the keyboard work. The only way to get back up and running is to use the power button. This issue didn't always happen, as I remember it working fine in the first couple of months after I built it but then it just started happening one day. I don't think malware could be a cause as I have antivirus programs installed, and they were among the first I installed on day one.

A few weeks ago, I did some tinkering with the drivers for my wireless adapter, (Netgear WNDA3100v2 N600) and it seems to have made... some change? Now sometimes when it freezes i can move the mouse, but if I click on something it won't launch or open and it will eventually lock up completely like before. I've bounced from thing to thing, not knowing what is even causing this issue. At first I thought it had something to do with Google Chrome, then with my wireless adapter/drivers for it, and now I'm completely lost. Maybe it's something to do with the power supply? I have no idea anymore.

I saved up so much for this computer and I really just want it back in reliable gaming condition! If you need me to post some sort of spec list or log file just tell me how and I'll do it. Thanks to anyone who's willing to help me! :(

I have to question the PSU. That seems like a rather low wattage PSU for running that CPU and GPU combo. You might be overdrawing the PSU and causing the issue. For a setup like that I wouldnt go any less than a 750W PSU.

So my only option is to buy a new PSU and maybe it will work? Hm... Well, before I try something like that is there anything else I should try that I can do now? If I have no other option then I'll have to save up for another PSU :/

The only other thing I would really suggest is pay attention to when it happens and record the time. When you get it back up and running, check out the event viewer for around that time. See if there are any error level messages in it.

Random hangs (freezes) due to the Windows configuration, faulty hardware, damaged system files, software compatibility, damaged registry files or malware. However, because this behavior is random, it can be especially difficult to identify the proper cause.

If you have recently installed an app or driver and find that Windows is now hanging randomly, try removing the recently installed software. If you have a restore point saved before you installed the software, try running System Restore to return the system to a working state.

Run these commands,

Right click Start Button select Command Prompt (Admin) Copy paste this and press enter

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Same command prompt copy paste this and press enter

sfc /scannow

As it can be due to Malware or virus even though you feel it is not.
Have you recently run any scans on system, what Anti-Virus are you using ? Use this to run a scan, free version.
Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software
Also try this, at run command type at command prompt MRT.EXE
Be Windows Malicious Removal tool.

Yes there is not enough power for Gigabyte Video card you have, as it requires a 600W PSU
Make sure Video card has most recent driver software as even other hardware on system.
GIGABYTE - Graphics Card - AMD - PCI Express Solution - Radeon

You need to calculate by the number of hardware items you are putting on the system when purchasing a PSU, so it is sufficient enough to power all that is on it.

We could also try programs to to test the hardware, Video Card and CPU, but i would try some of above suggestions first.

I found the box to my PSU, and it says it's 650W. The card's box says it only needs 600W, so shouldn't that be enough? I know there are all the other components that need to be powered so is that why 650 isn't enough?

Just going by your specs you listed here, shows this Rosewill CAPSTONE Series CAPSTONE-550 Continuous 550W & 50 degree C Power Supply

A 550W power supply. Try a site like this get an idea of a PSU having enough power, select each item.
Still need to take at hand Video card does require 600W min. whatever get from calculator still need at least that, if that is what you have then pretty much fine on that end unless any issues with PSU voltage wise .

eXtreme Power Supply Calculator - The only power supply calculator trusted by PSU manufacturers and computer enthusiasts

And this was a possible part of your issue, PSU. Need to go through more of the solutions listed in other post.
Also use Windows Memory Diagnostics to test RAM, found in administrative tools.

You never want to be right on the edge of what your PSU can supply. It might work fine for a while, but PSUs tend to die quickly when you do that. IF your system needs 650W all together, I wouldnt go less than 850W and would like go for a 1000W PSU. That is just my opinion though. I always like to go overkill on things like that. I see it as future proofing.

Oh wait, that's strange. I see I listed 550W for the power supply because I just basically copied and pasted from my order history from Amazon. However, I have a picture of most of the parts that I took before I started building and the box certainly says 650W. So either I got sent the wrong one by accident, (which in this case is a good thing haha) or something's weird with my order history. Either way, I'll try some other solutions you guys posted and keep you all updated. Thanks!

Edit: Oh wait I realized what happened with the listings. I got the PSU from Newegg and on their product page for that, you can choose from a variety of wattages and I guess the default was whatever I listed by accident. Now on to troubleshooting more...

OK guys, I think I'm close. I believe I may be affected by this issue: Haswell compatibility with Corsair power supplies

And so someone told me I should try disabling my processor's C states or sleep states or whatever in the BIOS, and I went and looked for a while through all the settings I could find there but I didn't see anything about those power saving modes or how to disable them.

Can anyone tell me how to access those settings, with the motherboard I have?

Augh, I really thought I was on to something... Well what now? What can I even google? I've been trying for days straight, and I've exhausted all the different ways I can word the issue for google XD

Do we even know what the cause is? Because someone else told me that it's impossible for a card to ever need 600w all by itself and I'm just really confused now ;~; If it is a problem with the PSU then I should go about contacting Corsair, even if it's not faulty? Thanks :D

Truthfully you started this post with saying after you installed this driver( wireless adapter, (Netgear WNDA3100v2 N600) Seemed when started having these issues. Ever make a restore point before this driver, try that. Next uninstall that driver, see if it goes away could be a conflict there. To me if graphics card manufacturer says 600w minimum that least you should have in a PSU for this card.

Won't hurt to ask Corsair, they are there for support of there product if you have any question even if it's not faulty as you paid for there product, go to there website get contact information that will alleviate you from thinking and knowing if the possibilities of the PSU being the issues or not. As they will ask for you system specs. Corsair is a good reputable company, sure won't charge you since probably still under warranty.

Well, the issue was present long before I made any changes regarding my network adapter's drivers. Additionally, by now it's pretty safe to say that my tinkering with those drivers had no effect on the problem because the freezing is unchanged.

You say that site I linked said my PSU should support the processor I have? That makes even less sense, now we're back to square one. I'll see about contacting Corsair tomorrow.

PS: Thanks for sticking with me this long, hopefully we'll find a solution eventually. <3 :)

Your welcome anytime !

What i am confused about is originally specs here was Rosewill PSU 550W, then you say had it wrong, no it's 650W, but now it's this AX860i Digital ATX Power Supply â which is a 860W. Which is it, did you change the PSU ?

Truthfully i have seen issues with the AMD Radeon R9 video card before even here causing some issues similar to this from drivers it uses.

Some basics to reasons a PC can freeze and lockup on you Windows freezes or stops responding.

Sorry for the mixup, I didn't change the PSU or anything and the one I have is the 650w one, I only listed the 550w by mistake.

There's been issues with my kind of card before, you say? That's great ;~; though at least I could look around and try to update those drivers and see what happens.
