Solved No audio and internet connectivity after AVG update

Hi

I restarted my system (Win 8.1, latest updates) after a routine AVG update, only to notice upon re-entering the desktop that I now have no audio services running or ability to connect to the internet (no detectable network, which is strange because all my settings are as is.).

Trying to enter control panel, it takes an inexplicably long time to open - in fact I had to perform a hard reset, and I'm still getting the same problem and also unable to open control panel.

Can anyone suggest what else I can try before starting to consider a hardware issue being the problem?

Just a thought - I recall windows downloading a scheduled update a day or so back and upon restarting AVG detected a suspicious system file that I allowed it to quarantine. It was only after ignoring AVG's prompts to restart and then finally restarting that the problem occurred.

Currently not at my PC to check, but would restoring said file from the virus vault (probably new from the update) fix the problem? I suppose it may be worth trying

I seriously doubt WU was flagged as malware by AVG, never happened to me. Find out which file was placed in quarantine. Google it and you should see some hits. You can restore it from quarantine and run AVG scan again to see if it would repeat finding.

Thanks I'll have a look - also strange, so it might not be the WU but something else. Couldn't have happened at a worse time for me this whole thing!

Uh, it's always like that, Murphy's Law !!!

You could always upload the file to Virus Total too, to see what all the major AV say about it. From there you can also get any information on what the file is or has

UPDATE: Thanks for the suggestions - restoring the file back from AVG's virus vault fixed the problem. I wish I could remember what it was exactly - but it was probably something crucial from a number of recent software updates I ran that was flagged by AVG.

I would still comb with fine comb AV and Mbam, just in case something corrupted some system file.
