I have a little batch file I use to edit the hosts file:

@echo off
%homedrive%
cd %windir%\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -s -h -r hosts
notepad hosts
attrib +s +h +r hosts

Copy and paste this into a EditHosts.bat file and run it from a Elevated Command Prompt.

Here is what I did.

I downloaded this zip file to give me a hosts file with lots of sites in it to be blocked.

View attachment hosts.zip

I put it in a new folder by itself & extracted it with 7zip.

I right clicked the mvps.bat file & chose to run it as Administrator.

I got this---

As you can see, the original Hosts file was renamed & saved.
To replace it I simply have to delete the new one & rename the old saved one.

Just showing how I did things.

I'm trying to remember why I stopped using the MVPS hosts file. Maybe it was a performance degradation? It has over 15,000 entries in it.

Indeed, it slows down internet by a few hundreds percent. There is no need for HOSTS anyway, extensions usually allows customized HOSTS and adding own webpages like https://chrismatic.io/ublock
