Windows 10 is ready?

While setting up a new 8.1 VM just now, I got a prompt saying "Windows 10 is ready" "Get started". When I clicked on the prompt, nothing happened, though.

Has Windows 10 hit RTM already? I know Microsoft is giving away free upgrades to all 7/8/8.1 users, but does that even apply to Enterprise (which is what this 8.1 VM is)?

Windows 10 has not hit RTM. The earliest guess is July but nobody really knows,

I was talking to an HP online helper the other day for a System Recovery and they told me my PC was designed around Windows 8 and will not run properly on 10.

That's not true at all. I'm running Windows 10TP on a Windows 7 laptop. One only needs the video drivers for that model and in ten the rest are pretty much taken care of. There are others using XP and Vista machines too.

Would switching to 10 give me these drivers?

Well ... yes and no ...

Your machine will most likely work OK on Win10. I'm using a machine that was upgraded from Win7 to Win8. to Win8.1 -- and it works fine on Win10.

However, what they might mean is that Win10 will be released with new hardware features (i.e., biometrics options), which, since your machine was designed for Win8, it will likely NOT support. But, if you don't intend to use those features, then that won't be a problem.

HP really doesn't want folks upgrading existing machines to Win10; instead, they want folks buying new HP Win10 machines -- they make money that way.

Windows 10 is just about "feature complete" - vendors will only be updating drivers between now and the release date - the drivers windows update provides can also be considered beta until then.

I'm running Win10TP on a Dell Inspiron 530S that originally came with Vista. Also have it on a Toshiba Satellite Notebook about 4-5 years old. Only drivers I needed were for my 2 HP printers.

I don't know what a biometric option is.
How would one know what would be lost if they switched?

Take an image backup using Macrium Reflect Free then try it. If there are problems or you don't like it then restore the image and you'll be right back to where you were before you tried Win 10.
