Using this logic, you would get the wasted energy back during the winter since it would help heat your room. Unless you have your computer in a closet (Does anyone cool/heat a closet?), the heat output from your computer will have a negligible impact on your heating/cooling bill.

Laptops have the external power converter, which reduces the chances of power fluctuations damaging equipment.

We had a Dell with Windows Vista that got hit by thunder or lightning, and it damaged the NIC card. I had to buy an USB adapter to plug into it, so that we could get internet on it. After the computer broke down and we bought a new one, I don't know what happened to that adapter.

Leave on, Sleep or Shut Down.
Ok so it is an old question, but one I am quite keen to know the answer. A time ago PC users would argue is it better to leave the PC on, put it in sleep mode or shut it down completely. I am not that worried about power consumption I just want to know what stresses your CPU and other hardware...
