I have a bunch of files that I would like to put in a sequence to go on a thumb drive or just in another folder so I can use the slideshow.:confused:

I have windows 8.1.

On a recent trip I took photos with one camera and my wife used another. I also created some JPEG files with text.

Suppose I want to arrange them something like
text slide 1.jpg
my pic dsc890011.jpg
her pic img001101.jpg
text slide 3.jpg
her pic img001173.jpg
my pic dsc89022.mov
text slide 2.jpg
her pic img001155.jpg
my pic dsc8901125.jpg

How can I do this?
Is there an app whereby I can just highlight a icon and drag it into a new position?

I don't know for sure, but it should be as easy as highlighting all the photos that you want to include in your slideshow, right click and choose re-name. That should do it.

You might download this free utility and it will rename files for you:
Introduction - Bulk Rename Utility

Now I have not tested this utility so use it with caution. Hope this helps.

How 2 put photo files in a sequence for e.g., a slideshow

My post was unclear.

When I try by <select all> <rename> and type something in front of the nae, I am able to put the same prefix into each name so that
dsc03589.jpg ==> 001 dsc03589.jpg
dsc03597.jpg ==> 001 dsc03597.jpg
dsc03589.jpg ==> 001 dsc03589.jpg
and so forth.

If i were to try to reorder (re-sequence) by adding a prefix to each name (or by replacing the name) so that the prefix would indicate the order I want to have the files in, I would have to highlight and rename each file name.

I was hoping that there was a way to drag-and-drop photo file icons into a new sequence and the computer would remember the order I wanted to show the photos.

now I have the files in an order something like this
her pic img001101.jpg
her pic img001173.jpg
her pic img001155.jpg
my pic dsc890011.jpg
my pic dsc8901125.jpg
my pic dsc89022.mov
text slide 1.jpg
text slide 2.jpg
text slide 3.jpg

and want to have them in an arbitrary order something like this
text slide 1.jpg
my pic dsc890011.jpg
her pic img001101.jpg
text slide 3.jpg
her pic img001173.jpg
my pic dsc89022.mov
text slide 2.jpg
her pic img001155.jpg
my pic dsc8901125.jpg

If the photos were old fashioned 35mm slides, I could just put them into the slots in a tray in the order I want to show them.

P. S. I tried moving them onto a thumb drive in the order I want, but Windows puts them back in name order.

It all depends on the software you are using for a the slide show maker. If your using windows movie maker, it will paly the slides (images) in the order that you put them in. If you are using the automatic slide show from the windows photo viewer, it will play them by file name and in order by name.

To really use the photo viewer you will need to rename the files in the order you want them to be shown i.e. rename the first file to 1.jpg and the next 2.jp and so forth. There is not a real quick solution but there is a solution...you just have to chose what works best for you.

Thank you.

I'll look up the movie maker and see if it preserved the resolution XHD tv display.

Never tried movie maker. Suspect that the slides might display a little faster than you would like, however.

Files in Windows Explorer will display differently with Windows File Viewer, etc.... depending on how they are sorted.

Displaying pictures/slides is what MS Office Powerpoint is for. Just be aware that the Powerpoint file will grow rapidly. You'll probably be surprised at how fast it gets to be a huge file.
