Hi there

I've noticed one little problem in W8 that IMO needs to be fixed by Ms.

If you hook an external monitor to your laptop say and use the Windows + P key to switch to that display only -- fine. Also switching back again is no problem or even running on BOTH displays.

BUT if you shutdown / switch off and then unplug the external monitor -- on reboot -- your screen will after the initial startup and login will go blank. You need to plug in the external monitor again to bring the menu back to switch the display back to the primary.

There might be another way but if you only have a blank screen ??? !!!.

Cheers
jimbo

Hey Jimbo,

This may be a feature of the hybrid shutdown/restart/reboot cycle. I may be wrong, but I don't think when you reboot Win 8 does it poll all your devices again. Since this is essentially a hibernation/sleep restart (for speed), we may have to live with this. :(

I ran into this problem when I originally installed Win 8. On reboot, the primary screen came up blank, until I turned on the secondary screen, and fixed the arrangment. That was a most interesting couple of minutes until I figured out what happened.
My secondary screen is hooked up w/ HDMI, and my primary screen is DVI (no HDMI port). Screens seemed to be assigned initially as HDMI, DVI, VGA Analog, until you fix this. Let me know if I'm wrong on this assumption. Thanks

John
