Solved Help! No keyboard/mouse on 8.1 and rootkit alert!

Last Saturday I checked for new drivers with DriverMax Pro and started to download/install updates for two Intel-related devices (can't remember which they were now).

At a certain point of the installation of these new drivers Windows warned that the program had stopped working and offered the options "Check online for a solution and close the program" and "Close the program".

To my surprise, Windows 8.1 itself was frozen too... So I pressed the power button to turn the PC off. Then I turned it on again just to find the keyboard and mouse not working after the SO starts–they're OK while booting, only when Windows starts they go away.

But things got worse after I tried another turn off/turn on move: UnHackMe showed a warning about the Vanquish rootkit!

Please, help me!

Well, I've been using it since 2009 and never had any problem.
As to the case in question, it's not clear to me whether the problem was caused by the drivers updates or by the detected rootkit.

Paultx,

Win8.1 is better at determining the best drivers for your machine - Windows Update offers drivers in the optional section. There's no longer the need to use 3rd party driver finders - each release of Windows since Vista has gotten better at this and MS finally had enough and made Win8.1 Driver aware. More to the point - MS tests all drivers in their lab to ensure that they work and only offers drivers that do work.

The fact that you've used DriverMax since 2009 doesn't change this - it only shows that you continue to use an unnecessary 3rd party utility. Win8.1 is not Vista or Win7 - it's superior in many ways.

UnHackme states that it will detect and remove Vanquish. I don't know if the trial version actually does anything or just reports what it finds. If you paid for it, it sounds as though it would do the job of removing vanquish, but I've never heard of it before ... so again 3rd party utilities are questionable.

Double check your machine with these malware scanners:

Kaspersky TDSSKiller: Detect / Repair TDSS Rootkits - Windows 7 Help Forums
When you get to Step 7 Analyze, you might need help. Post the TDSSKiller log as described in Step 10 - you're not done yet, the suspicious files are still on your machine and need to be analyzed and if they are malicious, they need to be removed.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free - Windows 7 Help Forums
Before scanning in Step 6, change the setting so include rootkit detection

MbamRoots.png

Rootkits are very difficult to eradicate and many malware experts consider a clean install the only way to fix them.

Slartybart, I very much appreciate your considerations and suggestions, but first I need to know if there is some way to access the Windows 8.1 system from a removable medium so I can try to do a system restore to a state previous to the problem.

I created a recovery drive following this tutorial: Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8. But TNA, since when I got to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore I was asked to choose an OS to continue, but I couldn't find any way to make that choice.

The closer I got to that was at some point–and I don't know how–I was able to access (from that very same USB flash drive) a menu to choose which of the two OS versions to start: Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Preview. I started the latter and the keyboard and the mouse worked OK.

I made some research and found this Hiren's BootCD but, honestly, I have no idea how to use it, or if it would work for my problem.

To make things more clear, what's happening is: I have access to the boot area, I can change BIOS settings and stuff. But once the MS logo appears and exactly at the moment that circular progress animation starts the keyboard and the mouse are turned off, so I see 8.1 start (I set it to skip the password) and load in all its glory... but I can't use it!

Which means I can't use anything from within the OS.

I use DriverMax Pro & like it.
I have no aversion to "third party" programs.
I find them useful.

I would never trust Microsoft to pick a driver for me.
I did in the past & the results were poor to say the least.

With DriverMax if a driver is no good it will revert to the older driver & offer other drivers.

As far as recovery goes, Microsoft is clumsy & stupid, IMO.
I use Macrium Standard version.
Easy to use & works good.

Rant's over. :)

Try this first, then try the hard shutdown, then if necessary, I'll find instructions for using the Recovery drive.
I'm reading the tutorials re: Recovery / Recovery drive, but I seem to be in a loop. Still looking and reading.

Download and unzip DriveCleanup
This utility removes USB devices that are no longer connected to the system

Boot to 8.1 and disconnect the mouse and KB, the transceiver if wireless (USB - yes?)
Connect the mouse and keyboard to different USB port(s).
Any luck?

If you have control over 8.1 run driveCleanup
then run the malware scanners I posted earlier.
If you cannot use your mouse or KB, try this next:
shut down your machine hard 3 times in a row.
hard shut down: boot into Windows then press the power button to turn off the machine.

The 3rd (4th?) boot should automatically boot into Recovery.
select Troubleshoot
select Startup Settings (you might have to select Advanced options, then select Startup Settings)
select Restart
select Enable Safe Mode
-> with Networking
sign in with an account with administrator privileges

see if any of that helps

When you say ... so I can try to do a system restore to a state previous to the problem. what do you mean?
Do you have a System image that you previously created or are you referring to a System Protection Restore Point?

I think you can do either in Safe mode, but I'm not certain.

You will be able to run drivecleanup and the scanners in safe mode, assuming the mouse and KB are working.

Slartybart, every solution that needs access to Windows 8.1 will not apply, since I can't use the mouse and the keyboard. But I tried the hard shut down suggestion and it indeed worked the way you said. After three times of hard shut down, the PC showed that Automatic Repair screen:

1qpyis.jpg
This is in Brazilian Portuguese, my mother tongue.

But I couldn't go beyond that because of... no access to the mouse and the keyboard...

I guess the solution will come from stuff that run from external media like a CD or USB drive. I have no experience with such things, so I ask you to suggest some that are the most easy to use. Then maybe I can gain access to 8.1 from a USB drive and
, for instance, use a program that gives access to Windows System Restore and allows me to restore the OS to a state prior to this whole problem.

And another idea... As I told you before – and I'm not certain how – when I tried that recovery USB drive I created using 8.1 from my notebook, I could somehow run Windows 10 Technical Preview (build 9926, installed on a second hard drive) and could access a folder in the Windows 8.1 hard drive from where I copied some CorelDRAW files I've been working on. So I wonder If I could use this method to delete some system folder and stuff... Just a guess...

did you try moving the devices to another USB port?

Do the devices work on another computer?

I also asked whether you have a System image or plan on using System Protection Restore Point.

I understand that the mouse and KB aren't working - that makes it difficult to get anything done.

Yes. And also on the same computer, with Windows 10 TP, like I said before.

Ok, try this:

In Win10TP or on another computer

Follow Option One - Media Creation Tool and burn to DVD in
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Boot the machine using the DVD you just created.

There are two possible resolutions - this is difficult because you have no input device :(

  • See if there is a Restore Point (RP) available that is before the mouse & KB stopped working. You'll have to know the approximate date and look at the list of RPs

Follow OPTION ONE and steps 8 through 14 in OPTION TWO in:
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4692-system-restore-how-do-windows-8-a.html

Pay attention at step 9 of Option Two - many people miss this and think there isn't an earlier RP
Make sure you select the Radio button for
radioYe.png Choose a different restore point

  • If there is NOT a Restore Point that is dated before the issue started, then try a Refresh.

Read the tutorial so you know what's going to happen, ask any questions before proceeding.
:ar: Applications you installed will NOT be retained and will have to be reinstalled.
Make sure you have the key for any software you purchased!

I'm not certain if a Refresh will 'correct' drivers, but it does reset the system back to original condition while retaining user data.

This step is only necessary if there was NOT a RP you could use.

I created the DVD with my Windows 8.1 notebook and ran it on the problematic desktop PC.

First, trying System Restore, there was only one restore point, and it was exactly the one DriverMax Pro had created when the problem started. I chose it and started the restoring process, but when the system restarted it said it couldn't complete the restoration:

2dsp7rm.jpg

The message says it did not complete successfully, etc.

An important part of the message:

"System Restore failed to extract the file:

D:\Windows\AppCompat\Programs\Install\IN24BD~1.XML"

But the most important point is that: "The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore."

So... I tried the Refresh option. The result was that message:

2jeob5g.jpg

It reads: "Refresh the PC - Problem refreshing your computer."

Then I tried Update PC. The result was that message:

2hrh1j9.jpg

It reads: "Update PC - Problem updating your computer. No changes were made."

Once again I tried Refresh, but then there was a different message:

2s6kosz.jpg

It says it couldn't do the job because "a required drive partition is missing".

I gave System Restore one more try, and this time I knew what it did mean "The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore"...

212iz4m.jpg

It says there's no restore point available.

Just on curiosity I clicked the System Protection link on that dialog box and here's what I've got:

4tartk.jpg

"System Restore only available on online operating system"...

Since things got beyond my comprehension, I decided to reboot and skip the "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." warning, in order to see what would happen next.

And... Surprise!

2rpb1af.jpg

Sorry if at any point I seem confused about Refresh and Reset, I tried my best to find the actual messages in English or to translate them from Brazilian Portuguese.

Now I'll take some time to get myself together...

I suggest creating a portable 8.1 USB drive/stick from another computer. Boot it on the bad computer then run several rootkit/antivirus programs on the offending drive.

Worst case, then you can pull things from it you don't want to lose. Of course scan everything.

I guess this may be the only solution left... What do you suggest? Do you have any particular tool or set of tools in mind?

But I thought of trying to fix Windows 8.1 from within Windows 10 TP, since I can have access to the 8.1's hard drive with administrative rights. Problem is I have no idea what to look for, to search for, and so on. I guess there could be some system and/or protected operating system folder(s) or file(s) I could modify, delete... And I've heard of apps like Resource Hack... I know messing with these stuff is risky but I'm now in "desperate times require desperate measures" mode...
