Data CD's / DVD's coming up as blank, after new hard drive

My computer suffered a bit of a jolt and the hard drive failed, I took it in and had the hard drive replaced. And in the process of putting things back on it that I used to have ran into this problem.

The computer recognises original disks as in game disks, but not a copied one, please bear with me the initial disk I discovered the problem with is a copy because the original got damaged however I DO have the appropriate rights to install the game. I also originally used this disk to install the game on this computer before the change of hard drive, so the only change is the hard drive and the loss of everything on it.

I can put various dvd's and cd's (that I have created in the past) in the drive that contain music, or documents, or photos, or a mix of these things and they all come up as if blank. I have opened these disks previously on this computer with the old hard drive. They open or play fine in all our other computers (3 laptops and desk top, however these all run XP or 7).

I am not sure if this is of any help but I have an Acer Aspire V5 its a touch screen laptop with Windows 8.1.

Ok so right after posting my insistent googling gave me the answer! I simply cleaned the little lens thing in the disk drive, and now its working. Odd though that it didn't stop reading all disks?

I appologise, that worked temporarily, the game began to install and then I got a "cyclic redundancy error" and it quit installing. I took the disk out and put it back in again and now its "blank" again. The other disks with music, images, documents are still coming up as blank.

I am beginning to think that this might mean I need a new disk drive? :(
