Solved Why do I need OneDrive?

I have just a pc.
Why do I need OneDrive?

To store your roaming profile for your user account.

It can be nice for recovery if you ever need to reinstall but it's not needed. I don't use it at all as I use only a local logon.

I use it for Pictures and unimportant Documents such as batch files, portable pc repair programs, Windows repair information., toshare between my different OS versions(Win 7, 8.1, 10TP) and when I go to someone's house to repair their system, I can logon in IE and [DEL]drag and drop [/DEL] download these files on their PC. Basically I use it as a roaming PC toolbox.

I don't need it. Nor do I need or want an MS account. Anything I want to save goes on a DVD or external HDD. And I have no other devices to sync to.

Needing is up to you, but you could keep all your files and photos in your online OneDrive (aka: cloud), and access and share them from any phone, tablet, and computer.

If you don't need or want OneDrive in Windows 8.1, then you could disable OneDrive integration to be rid of it.

I had no idea what a "roaming profile" was, but subsequent answers made it clear and were very useful, so I think I'll use it. Thanks for all you replies.

I had much the same thoughts when I set up my new desktop just over a year ago. {1st new PC in 10 years) Did I need it? NO
Did I want it? Not NECESSARILY

But! After getting a better understanding of it's functionality, Can It Be Useful? ABSOLUTELY!

If nothing else it's great for photo sharing. I have since discontinued my PhotoBucket Subscription

And when I set up my new laptop a couple of months ago, having a MS Account with sync enabled made the initial setup a snap. It reduced my initial setup time to almost nothing.

Everyone is pushing their own Cloud Storage these days but I have a greater degree of trust with MS than I would with most others. Whether that is based on sound logic or not I don't know. I still would not store anything highly personal, private or anything financially related on anyone's Cloud Storage.
