I'm a Windows 8 newcomer so I haven't quite mastered everything yet. When I switch on the PC I click on the front page which takes me to my logon screen. When I try to enter my Password, my key strokes have no effect. I cannot enter a password. Restart and it comes up again and I can enter my password. Help please, what is happening to prevent me entering my password on power up?

Try to boot in safe mode. What's the result?

Not sure I understand how to do this in windows 8.1 as apparently we can't F8 anymore. I can restart into safe mode but that won't prove anything because I can always enter the password normally from restart just not when switching on PC.

If it won't work from a cold boot then that can be the keyboard isn't initializing properly during post. If your system is UEFI, and you are using the old PS2 ports, make sure they are enabled or set to auto. If it is USB, make sure its not plugged into a USB 3.0 port as those aren't meant for keyboards or mice during boot. I think the 3.0 ports are only for data drives like flash drives and external hard drives. Plug into a USB 2.0 port.

That problem is strange for sure.

In my experienced, I got several PCs same as your problem. These were virus affected. Clean windows solved the problem. Boot the PC with live CD. Thus you can be sure that your keyboard and USB is working properly. Also follow lmaneke.

That's a very good point, also check your batteries if using an IR KB/mouse.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

Definitely not batteries because it works on restart. In fact it's worked on cold logon a couple of times so I'm now down to an intermittent problem. They are the worst kind.

Do you have another keyboard to possibly do some testing? Because if a standard keyboard works then that's a good sign there's nothing major wrong.

Thanks, I'll try another keyboard when I get a chance. I had ruled that out because it is alright on a restart but I suppose it could be that on a cold start it's not identifying the IR keyboard but might see a wired keyboard.

You were right I switched to my old wired keyboard and the problem went away. So my problem now has a different view.

Problem can now be defined as wifi keyboard doesn't initiate on Windows start-up but does on restart

I have now compounded that because I have now added a second user and the problem also occurs when switching users on sign in.

My target now is to understand why the keyboard doesn't initiate on start up and hope that solves the sign in problem as well

Problem solved

Acer support advised me to remove the wifi dongle, shut down, restart and reinsert the dongle and it seems to work

thanks for input
