Right-click On Folders Opens VLC Media Player

For some reason, when I right-doubleclick a folder, instead of the folder opening I get an empty instance of VLC Media Player.

This started suddenly. I have run Malwarebytes, Avast! Adaware and CCLeaner and none of them can find any virus. I have Outpost Firewall Pro.

I imported a file I found online called Folder.reg, but it only made matters worse and I had to revert to an earlier backup. Unfortunately, the backup also has this error.

I'm running Win 8.1 Pro x64 on a desktop.with 32GB memory and an i73770K that is slightly overclocked.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi, I appreciate the suggestion, but unfortunately the bat file didn't solve my problem.

One thing change, though. Now, when VLC Media Player tries to open the folder it gives this message:

"VLC can't recognize the input's format: The format of 'file:///C:/Users/xxxxxxxxxxx/Desktop/Exercise%20Files/Chap05/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/script.js' cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details."

I haven't had time to experiment around with this but could it be something in?

1. Default Programs

2. Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Program
