Solved Hard drive file recovery - the best method goes to...?

Hey everyone,

I have a hard drive that does not seem to open when it is connected to any (pc or mac) computer. A screen pops up which installs the driver, but after that takes place, it does not display under the normal location in the computer folder. I did find it in the computer management area (image at the bottom of post) though.

I'd like to know if there is an easy way to gain the files off it, or what preferred (free) program I should use to get to the files, without the risk of losing too many.

I also would like to know if the drive is on the 'fritz', or on its way out. Would reformatting be the best option to get it to work (after removing the files on it first, of course), or if it has become a heavy paperweight (It is one of those old, huge and heavy HDDs).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

**PLEASE NOTE** My Page File is on an unrelated SSD, but I do have one (if you were curious). Also, this problematic HDD was not originally connected to my current computer. In case it is needed, the problematic drive is labeled Disk 2 in the image

Seems like that middle partition doesn't have a letter assigned to it, did you try that ?

Couldn't you just use Macrium Reflect to image the drive in question to a usb ?

The only free Windows data recovery app I've run across is "recuva". But the best one I've used is RecoverMyFiles -- which is free to download and try -- to see what it finds. You only have to buy a license to do the actual file recovery.

EASus Partition recovery free is also good.
EASus Data Recovery is also free and does good job too.

It doesn't appear to allow me to change it's letter, but I am able to do so with my working drives.

I may give recuva a try... EaseUS Data Recovery only allows up to 2GB data recovery, and I have a whole drive of files to recover, and I have no idea how much space the files take up. But please suggest more, I'm curious to know if it can be fixed or if I should just format soon after I recover the files.

Thanks for the help so far!

After you recover files you can do whatever you please with it. If you are not going to use it for booting any more you can delete all the partitions, reformat and repartition any way you like it. If and when you recover files, check them good because sometimes they get corupted in the process.

Recuva failed to scan or recover any files from the troubled drive (I did use deep scan). Its reason was that it could not determine the file system type (none). :(

I think it is fried. I can't even get it back up on computer management, and diskpart can't find it. It is also making clicking sounds, which I didn't notice earlier. I think it is safe to say that it is history. Thanks all for the help, though!

That clicking may be bad thing but before you chuck that HDD give it another chance by downloading one of the testing programs Download Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks for it's make, you never know what miracles are lurking out there.
