Gateway neb171 won't go into factory restore mode.

I have a Windows 8.1 that I'm locked out of. I cannot get it to go into the factory restore mode. I have tried Holding the function key and alt + f10 as well as f11 but nothing happens. I cannot get it to go into the boot menu or anything. Any ideas?

Can you boot into Windows? If yes try turning off Windows Fast Startup. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html Then shutdown and try it again. Fast Startup puts the PC into a hybrid sleep mode on shutdown instead of a full shutdown.

I've tried to get into windows but there is a password. I cannot get into windows.

So why don't you know the password? Where did you get this PC from? IS it a BIOS password or a Windows Password?

I work at a resale shop. We didn't have the customer take the password off before we got it. The card with the password is not legible so I have been trying to do a factory restore for the past couple of days.

Call the customer and get the password.

I would never try to hack someone's computer. We have over 65 computers in stock. I just don't want to waste the investment that we've made in it.

Hope this helps you, as this is an easy way to get into the Advanced options on Windows 8.1 if you cant log in.

Get to the login screen. You will see the power button. click on that.

Before you click "Restart" Press and hold down the "Shift" key, while holding down the shift key, click restart.

It will say "Please Wait". from there, it should boot to the troubleshooting area. Click on troubleshoot, and check to see if there is a Recovery program in the area where it says "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC". It should list the Recovery program underneath those options.

If a Recovery program is not present, Click on "Reset your PC", and that should reset the computer to Factory Defaults. That's what I had to do to restore a gateway laptop.

Yeah, I know, most of the time its legitimate requests, but you can't always tell for sure. Some people can make up pretty fanciful stories as to why they need to get access to a PC. I'm not saying your one of those, just that we have no real way to tell. Helping someone with getting into a system can get you in trouble with the forums staff. As per the rule. My pointing out the rule was more of a heads up so you'd know why, if you didn't get any help. That's all.

one could also create recovery media on another windows 8 / 8.1 PC and use command prompt to copy the recovery image file to the recovery USB

And factory restore that way..

BIOS Password or Windows Password? Desktop or laptop? Googling Gateway neb171 didn't get me anything as far as what it is exactly. If somebody reinstalled Windows manually at some point, the recovery feature could be broken, or the recovery image gone all together.
