Solved Screen stutter + sound

Starting about 16 hours ago, I started getting screen freezes that last around 1 second, maybe a little less. Along with the freeze comes a sound, I can't place it but it is electronic, and most decidedly not normal. There are no accompanying error messages, crashes, or anything of the sort. The glitch occurs every 2-3 minutes, and is most disruptive to gaming.

Malwarebytes found one malicious file, which I quarantined, yet the problem persists.
I am on the Dell Inspiron 17r SE. As far as I can tell (and as far as device manager tells me) my drivers are up to date. I went and updated all 5 queued windows updates (which took a disturbingly long time for the ~800kb download, but thats off topic).

Would appreciate any help, as I cannot find anyone with the same error on any sort of forum (There are similar, but different).

I have what seems to be the exact same problem. I have checked and updated all drivers, run virus and malware scans (to no avail), checked to make sure all my hardware is hooked up correctly. this has been going on for almost a month for me. A friend has the same problem as well, 6 months plus for him. he has gone as far as replacing most of the computer parts thinking they might be the problem, so far it hasnt helped either.

The screen stutter and sound freeze almost always happens while a game is up in full screen. all devices plugged into USB ports freeze then restart. My headset will disconnect, the sound will redirect to my speakers, then switch back. after that all sound programs need to be reopened (raidcall, ventrilo, ect) game has to be restarted to fix the sound as it freezes and only plays the same sound that was playing when it froze. Skype stutters but fixes itself, almost no interrupt in conversations on there.

My computer worked fine from the time i built it until about a month ago.

Hoping someone can solve our problem.

Mine does not restart devices thankfully, but it sounds the same. I've noticed the sound is almost like a generator, or small motor.

The only thing I can think of that I had done to trigger this is windows went and restarted my laptop to install updates yesterday, that's when the issues started.

Are any of you running large background services. Scanning etc. I used to have stutter but it was down to the pc not being able to run right whilst SETI was running in the background via BOINC. I had to reset SETI to run only when pc was idle. With my latest machine I am running not only SETI but two other diagnostics softwares and gaming at the same time with zero sturrers.

I am guessing that the noise you are hearing is a 60hz tone, which is something commonly heard around electrical and electronic devices because wall power cycles at 60 hz (at least in the US, Europe is 50 hz). Here is a 60 hz tone someone uploaded to u-tube- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnd57eOyesk that sounds very 'bass-y' to me, real tones I have heard working on/around electronics always sound more 'whiney', it could just be my speakers though.

If the noise is coming from your monitor, I would recommend you search a forum for your monitor's manufacturer with the symptoms you described above. It may not be a serious problem. If the noise is coming from your computers power supply, that might be cause for worry. Hard for me to see how it could be coming from anywhere else, if it is a 60hz sound.

I am not running any large background programs, there is currently about 45% memory usage in task manager due to mcafee on-access scanner service and google chrome, but that is normal for my laptop. Since updating my graphics driver, and disabling a few startup processes the stutters have reduced to every 5 minutes or so.

The sound is more like 0:40 of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX2xvGYn5ao) although slightly higher pitched. Thank you for trying to diagnose. The sound is playing through my headphones, not from any individual components of my laptop. I am thinking it might be something wrong with my cpu, or possibly windows, as a I doubt a sound card glitch would cause the screen to freeze, and vice versa for a monitor glitch.

out of curiosity, does this only happen when you are playing games, or does it also happen while you are browsing or doing other things that don't work your cpu too much?

I have encountered it during gaming, internet browsing (curiously it pauses the youtube video while stuttering, but immediately resumes after it ends), google drive, and I have not done much else while this issue has been an issue.

I don't know what is wrong with your system, but maybe try booting it into safe mode and see if the problem goes away - there is a tutorial for enabling safe mode somewhere on this site.

If it does go away in safe mode, that might help to figure out what is going wrong.

Another option you might want to consider is System Restore, to before the updates were installed- assuming you had system restore enabled.

Hello All,

I've exactly the same behaviour as PaleWaffle described, It happend after a 22 windows update.

I've tried to remove them all, no fix.
Reinstall the soundmax drivers, no fix
Reinstall the nvidia drivers, no fix

This is happening when watching a video (youtube or VLC) it's also happening when listening only to music (Mp3 playing)

I've also noticed that my SSD drive with Intel Rapid Store was stopped. I guess was due to an update that try to make the system more compatible to do the 8.1 upgrade ( This auto upgrade, is not working at all on this dell computer)

Hello All,

I think I've found the issue.

Dell install a new software Dell SupportAssist Agent that seems not to be the most stable.

If you look at the installation date of that software and if it's correspond to the appear of the issue, then unistall it and for me it's seems to be the issue.

It's seems that software messus also other dell computers: Why launches Dell bloatware in Alien such as Dell Support Assist Agent Version and Dell data vault ? | NotebookReview

My main monitor, an iiyama 24 inch, is 60 hz - res 1920 x 1080 on 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 750 Ti - DVI, mHDMI, VGA - no problems at all visually. Laptop res is 1366 x 768 at 60hz; on ATI Radeon HD4200 - again on problem. I can run stuff off screen whilst gaming on either.

I checked, both Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssistAgent were installed. I uninstalled both of them, so far I haven't experienced any more stutters, but it is too soon to be sure.

Thank you in advance

I have been having a similar issue, though just noticing the noisy fan for a couple of seconds during startup; nothing audio or video related that I've noticed.

Today I saw that Dell Data Vault had appeared in Task Manager simultaneously with the fan noise. And I know this only started a couple of days ago, which is also consistent with when Data Vault and SupportAssist were automatically installed on my laptop.

I did post about this on the Dell forum, but there has been no response from Dell (not a big surprise).

I think it is uninstall time, though reading posts on the link in @betsatanas's post above, I'm not sure if this will deal with Data Vault, so maybe I'll be doing a restore or refresh.

The shame is I actually liked My Dell, which was replaced by these programs :(.
