Heres the story... customer got bad viruses.. did clean up and removal of the infections and I noticed the laptop wasn't shutting down. (I cant confirm that this wasn't an issue before. I didn't notice it but doesn't mean it wasn't there) when you go to shut down the screen goes off but power on light stays on and fan stays on. Have to hold power button to shut it off

HP Model Pavilion 2000-2b29WM

Heres what I have done so far...

1. I did the refresh (the full format one) but still did it. I still have windows 8 didn't bother updating to 8.1 yet since that's what I had before I refreshed it
2. updated/flashed BIOS but didn't work. Reset BIOS to default
3. Turned off "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"
4. put in different HDD and loaded Windows 7 and when I went to shutdown it locks up at shutdown so still problem shutting down but screen stays on.
5. tried different RAM
6.Tried different power adapter.
7. tried holding SHIFT while shutting down
8. Resisted punching the laptop.

I don't know what else. I was confident that the viruses did it but maybe its a coincidence and its some hardware issue?? Thanks

If you have a backup and are prepared to do a clean install, then here's what I suggest.

Get 8.1 if you have Win8 license.
See: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html
You don't need the license to download, only to install (if it an OEM install, the license will be read from BIOS)
Create a DVD - it's easier and there is nothing to think about for UEFI.

Boot to the install DVD you just made and select repair computer
Select Command Prompt (Cmd)
Type the following in the Cmd window

Diskpart
lis vol

Diskpart-a.png

** now you have to make sure that you select the correct drive, the drive letters might be different since you booted to the DVD)
** once you know the volume that is C: when your HDD boots, you can select it (C: might not be C: now though)

sel vol #
** # is the volume number associated with the volume you identified as the HDD Boot partition

lis dis

Diskpart-b.png

!! WARNING !!
Make certain the disk selected (*) is he correct disk
The clean command wipes the drive

clean

exit

Close [X] the Command Prompt window and install Win8.1 to the unallocated space.

This process should ONLY be used if you don't have any personal data on the drive or you have a recent backup of your data on an external drive. You will need to reinstall all programs, so grab the disks and find the licenses for any purchased software.
A backup on this drive will be destroyed by the clean command.

Yes,

you can use the Win8.0 key (or if it's OEM - the install will find it and use the BIOS key)

A good way to test hardware is to boot to Linux and see what works or doesn't work.

Your test is easy - boot and shutdown. Does it 'hang' on the Mint Mate shut down?

Note the version #'s might be newer than the image shows.

1. Download the Rufus bootable USB drive creation utility
Rufus home page
Rufus FAQ
2. Download the Linux Mint Mate ISO
Select a download mirror from the pages below that is nearest your location to lessen download time
Linux Mint Mate 32 bit (32 or 64 bit machines)
Linux Mint Mate 64 bit (only 64 bit machines)
Linux Mint Mate documentation [PDF]
3. Create a bootable USB thumb drive using Rufus and the Linux Mint Mate ISO
Mint Mate is 1.3 GB, so you need a thumb drive with at least 2 GB.
:warn: Creating a bootable thumb drive erases all data on the thumb drive.
:warn: If you have data on the thumb drive that you need, move it to your Hard Drive or burn it to an Optical Disc.
  • Connect the USB thumb drive to a USB port
  • Launch Rufus

    z.png

  • The fields in Rufus are filled in with defaults. The defaults work well, but a few things need to be verified or changed.
    1. Verify that Rufus selected the thumb drive you want to write. Change the Device if the wrong USB thumb drive is presented in that field.
    2. Change Create a bootable disk using from the default to ISO image
    3. Select Linux Mint Mate ISO as the source. The file should appear on the status bar
    4. unTick Create extended label and icon files
    5. Compare your Rufus window with the image above. If everything other than the Device field are the same, then continue to the next step. Note that the ISO name in the status bar is subject to change as new versions are released
    6. Press the Start button
  • The status bar notifies you when the process is Done
  • Press the Close button
Leave the Linux Mint Mate thumb drive connected for the next steps

4. Boot to Linux Mint Mate
Save any files you are working on, then Restart your machine
Check your machine documentation to determine the key that brings up the Boot Order startup menu. This example is from an HP laptop that assigns it to the F9 key.
When the machine begins to start again (black screen) tap the F9 key to bring up the Boot Order startup menu. There is only a short time to "catch" the Boot Order menu. If Windows starts, you will have to try again.
Select the USB flash drive with Mint Mate as the boot

Ok I tried Linux Mint and it got stuck at the shutdown. Which I find very strange that it does it to every OS. With Linux it said to eject the media disc and press enter. Which I did and it stayed at that screen all night. So this must be a hardware issue right? wonder what it is exactly that's causing it....

Yeah, it does sound like hardware, the last thing Mint does is eject the disc. The machine should shut down.

Try taking the machine to bare minimum hardware and see what Mint does with it.
IF it still hangs on shutdown, then you can eliminate RAM, GPU, extra drives, etc as the cause.

Are the parts still covered under warranty?

The parts are not covered under warranty... things ive ruled out
1.HDD
2.ODD
3.RAM
4.Wireless Card
5.Battery
6. Power Adapter
7. Keyboard

anything other than that I don't think is worth replacing because I assume it would have to be mobo or CPU mayyybbeeee the screen but I don't know im just reaching...unless anyone has any other ideas or suggestions ill marked this thread as solved?

You might want to check the event logs or performance to see if there are any clues there.

Performance tracks startup and shutdown - it might have something or it might not get that far when the shutdown hangs.

Hmmm, they're not where I thought they would be.

Try this instead.

Download and unzip this event view (filters Critical & Error) - import it into your Even view and select the custom view.

View attachment evtCrti&Err.zip

Since it's not clear what is causing this - you'll have to dig through the logs and see what jumps out. If you know a date and time, that would narrow down your log investigation.
