so i cant click the windows start button to get to tiles, nor use the charm to search.

i have had this happend before on another system.

ive read that it can be caused by an update but i havent downloaded nor installed an update.

my anti virus is avast but i do have malware antibytes installed so i can scan with that.

malware found nothing, i ended up having to restart explorer, but i want a perm fix.
is there an perm fix for it?

Make sure that all Windows Updates are installed.
From and Command Prompt (Admin) type sfc /scannow
If all corrupt system files are not fixed type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run the sfc command again
It may appear to be frozen but let these command run their course.

I just have this happen on random occasions, the system starts to seem a little slower and I can't open any tiles (or they open super slow) and also cannot open the charms bar. I usually just reboot the PC, and I haven't really found a 'permanent' fix, as it's a random problem for me anyway, so if it's not an all the time thing you may just have to remember to reboot or restart explorer.

Edit: I did also run the above commands when I had the problems, but they never seemed to do anything anyway..since just a plain reboot just fixed it for me, but I'd run them anyway.

Only thing that comes to mind is a bad install or bad boot. Don't know the exact reason, perhaps another member has an answer.

Open task manager, find Windows Explorer and end the task (right click on it and select end task). Then File/Run new task. type explorer.exe

Even somewhat faster: Task Manager| click on Windows Explorer| Restart

Hi,

My friend had the exact same problem on his computer, and we had determined what the problems were.

1. Bad Sectors on hard disk.

I had found that his hard drive had 320 bad sectors on it. I used a program called HDD Regenerator, and fixed the bad sectors on the Hard drive, and the problem went away, accept it would occur when the computer was on for long periods of time. The bad sectors got on the hard drive from his power supply failing. The hard drive would stop working while the computer was booting, reading or writing to disk. The power supply was replaced and now he has no troubles with his hard drive.

2. Bad Memory Stick

His computer had 4 GB DDR2 1066 installed. I had suspected maybe a bad memory stick, so I decided to use memtest86 and did a 3 hour test, come to find out, one of his memory sticks was bad. We replaced the memory stick, and the problem went away. He has no problems with the charms or start button now.

Not sure if these problems would be the same for you, but it is surely something you may want to try.

Hope this helps

Edit:

Here are his computer specifications
