Hi guys!

So I want to factory reset my SONY laptop. When I purchased it it came with Windows 8 and then when Windows 8.1 came out I got the free upgrade. My question is: If I factory reset my laptop will I be able to get the free upgrade to Windows 8.1? Or will I be stuck with just Windows 8?

Thanks in advance, :)

If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and you updated to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh or reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8 from hard drive recovery partition (recovery image location) or from the recovery USB flash drive. Afterwards, you will need to update to Windows 8.1 via the Store again.

*********************

Before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, you do not need to install all Windows 8 updates from Windows Update. You only need to install KB2871389 update, then you’ll be able to install the Windows 8.1 update via the Windows Store. Download and install KB2871389 update from link or from Windows Update.

KB2871389 (direct download link)
- All supported x86-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...5E-794177982162/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x86.msu
- All supported x64-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...49-140AB1CF7B5F/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu

But if you've opened the Windows Store and you don't see the Windows 8.1 update, then you will need to also install KB2917499 update.

UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8 product key.
I used factory recovery disks to reset my pc.

Using a Macrium image I went straight from 8 oem to 8.1.1 Pro.
It activated automatically.

In another post I posted this link to the store 8.1---

Hope this helps.

Yes, you can upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 again, after restoring your PC to 8.0. It will be the same process you used the first time you did it. Do all the Windows updates for Windows 8.0 and then open the Windows Store to upgrade to 8.1. Or as mentioned, download an ISO and do a clean install of 8.1. The Windows 8.1 install media you get with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool will use you OEM 8.0 key automatically. Assuming you download the correct version, Core, Pro or Single Language. It has to match what was installed at the factory for the embedded key to work. Example, if your PC came with 8.0 (Core) you down load 8.1 (Core), if it was 8.0 pro you download 8.1 Pro, etc.
