Windows...Get me out of here

Hard to know how to express so fed up. Purchased 2 Dell XPS ultrabooks with Windows 8. After months of trying to use Windows 8 with various problems (with all Dell and MS updates installed) have reached the end. Good help from Dell premier support but Windows 8 is just aweful.
The W8 interface is so confused and obtuse, not like windows, not like a tablet.
Security issues r a killer. Have Windows home server but nvr able to access from Windows 8.
Wireless connection drops for no reason.
IE crashes constantly, unworkable.
I try my XPS with W8 and just give up. Go to my iMac and everything works as expected.
I see MS accept Windows 8 was a knee jerk and Windows 10 is coming. They should nvr have dropped XP which was great, and now they r dropping support for W7. I think windows is in its death phase.
I was a Microsoft MVP for 4 years supporting it and helping others (in XP days) and enjoyed it. I cant defend Windows now any more, or even use it effectively myself.
My last resort short term is to buy W7 for the XPS in hopes to use my Dell investment.
After that I'm going Apple devices and nvr going back.
Windows, so sad, from great innovation to unusable operating system.

With regret, time to leave windows. My conclusion on Windows..my user name.

No response or help required. Get me out of here (i.e. windows).

I am really sorry that you have so much trouble with 8.1. But that is not typical. I have several 8.1 systems (on Dell XPS, HP and Asus) and they all work flawlessly. Maybe a refresh to the very beginning would help.

Running Windows 7 on those systems is possible. But you must hurry to get some of the last OEM licenses. I guess you already know that you have to set the BIOS to legacy mode and shut secure boot off.

I think there comes a point when we are happy with things and don't want it to change but computer technology soldiers on and we have to weather the rough bits like vista was for some and W8 is for others. With W8 MS haven't quite married well the touch and keytboard interfaces into a seamless union. I don't mind W8.1 it didn't bother me after a few days once I knew where everything I needed was and put Classic Shell for my start menu. I don't know why people have problems with it being unstable because my laptop doesn't give me the slightest hiccup.

I don't remember the OP ever saying he's running 8.1. Eh? He specifically said Windows 8.
It was fraught with problems, that's why 8.1 came out so quickly.
Windows 8.1 is the fix for many of the Windows 8 problems, but if you don't like the Metro screen and all that entails, then by all means go to the Desktop, download and install "The Classic Shell" (latest version). That gives you over 50 ways to make 8.1 your very own.

I set up Windows 8.1 for my customers all the time, and with the Classic Shell, I can make it look and work just like Windows XP or Win-7. I have several PC's here, running 8.1 and if I didn't tell someone it was 8.1, they would swear it was either XP or Win-7.

Once you get rid of that Metro crap, 8.1 is a very capable OS. And the 32 bit version even has 16 bit compatibility, which the 64 bit version or even Windows 7 does not have. I have some 25 yr old programs, written in 16 bit code, that run just fine on Windows 8.1/32.

Too bad, that you're in the UK and I'm in the US, Florida actually, or I could try to fix that PC for you.

Good Luck!

I personally think that is a mistake. You cannot for all times remain in the last century. Try that on a tablet.

I have agree, I have 3 setup running 8.1 update one is a Asus P7P Motherboard from 2008 Asus doesn't support windows 8 on yet I have it running perfectly for a few months now. My Wife's HP Touch Screen all in one, no issues my Asus G75 Notebook from 2012 no issues. I think that Classic Shell makes GUI quite similar to Win7 and the 8.1 and Update solved any issues I had over the last couple of years. Network issue can be handled you just have to set up your shares and permissions. I still use my Peer to Peer network I have had for the last 10 years or so. I connect using Authorized Users Group. Just as I had done with Window 2000, XP, and win 7. I think your giving up to easily or your having hardware issues. All the answers are right here I these forums, Questions are replied to by some pretty sharp windows tools.
Sure you can go back to Window 7 you might find it harder to get windows 7 drivers for some of your hardware but its doable I think there is even a tutorial here how to do it. if Not just click the windows 7 forum button

I do wonder why people join a forum then just make a post like this (the OP says they don't want a response or any help). Maybe they have no other way of expressing their frustrations. The shame is that the responses do offer helpful suggestions, but the OP maybe won't come back to read them.

But then the OP is from God's own county of Yorkshire, England and we Yorkshire people are inclined to be grumpy sometimes :D.

Ha ha - yes my winge was quite a rant. Sorry.

Is it windows 8.1 - yes...(all Dell and MS updates installed) .
But you must hurry to get some ofthe last OEM licenses...W7 OEM Premium for Dell DVD has arrived
Maybe they have no other way of expressing their frustrations....correct...£2K+ of XPSs, and my wife trying to work from home with one of them (and giving me ear ache).
but the OP maybe won't come back to read them...but I did come back, Im not proud, just crazy
Am I a grumpy Yorkshireman - yes...grew up in Scarborough and miss the beer
download and install "The Classic Shell" ....I will try just for interest.
Going back to Windows 7 may create a new set of problems...we will see....I have Dell premium support and they sympathise and will help.
Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7 ....many thanks looks a great set of advice.

OK...lets do it...get me out of here.

Let's do what? Roll you onward to Windows 8.1? Roll you back to Windows 7? Microsoft blue-disk or OEM? I had Austin TX Altex roll my laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 7 Professional, it COSTS me, however, I'm happy that all computers speak the same OS [Microsoft blue-disk x64], and no more unfixable explorer.exe and unfixable Network & Sharing Center access denied. Those I can fix in Windows 7 via Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One), but not in Windows 8, only a complete Win8 reinstall fixed Win8.

in probably 1 year windows 7 will be the same problem as xp.. old, mold, rolled and worth no gold..

windows 10 is on the horizon.. now even windows 8.1 (which apparently everybody hates because it didn't have a start menu..) is going to be out-dated..

unfortunately these companies (apple, microsoft now joining, and facebook etc.) just want to keep the consumer "needing" something new.. and they are doing it..

the problem lies with this - say you love xp.. say you really love windows 7, well unfortunately, you are forced to upgrade "if" (big "IF" here) if you need to use certain things. Applications are only being created for new operating systems.. and new technology is coming out. new memory, new hard drives.. if you stay with the "old" windows it won't even know what to do with certain hardware.. so no matter what - I don't care how much you like windows 7, you will need to be using whatever is out there "today" in technology..

so point is, do whatever you want, but with everything, the new comes with new problems. we need better programmers and better code language and etc.. but that's too deep..

anyway use what you know.. windows 7 still works. -till they blast the public with "its not safe there arent' any updates.."

I'm guessing Windows 7 will be around as long as XP has been. Government organisations and other companies will want to get some mileage out of it like they have xp ...10 years before they're ready to change probably. I'm on W8.1 now but W7 was spot on.

Reading threads like this make me think I really am in the minority. I really like Windows 8.1 update. It's much more secure, stable, and faster(especially the boot times mine are usually around are between 17-19 seconds according to event viewer). The only gripe I have is, opposite of Windows 7, with Windows 8.1 we have to resort to 3rd party tools for an incremental system image(yeah we can make a custom refresh, but then you still have to update Windows and installed programs). I find the built in tool improvements Rockin', like the Task Manager where I can now restart Windows Explorer and how much more I can do with it and how under the performance tab I can shrink it to view performance percentiles or values. The new PowerShell is just awesome(I don't hardly use the Command Prompt any more). I hardly ever use the Start Menu in 7(I use Desktop Toolbar because it's much faster or Windows Search) but on the All Apps I have a better overview that shows all options at once. I also like the Toast pop-ups that give me information right off(Mail, Calendar: appointments, System info with out having to click or mouse over the Action Center flag). I also find it great how when I right-click the Windows icon in the taskbar(or the lower right hand corner that's always hidden) the most used system tools are there, and I don't have to go to Control Panel or search around in Start Menu to find them. I find Windows 8.1 is more for power users. Like Tim Kirby say's "But, that's just my opinion.".

Cliff, that is a good write-up of why windows 8 is a little better than windows 7 haha.. i'm compiling a list (i know it's kinda pointless) i'm compiling a list of why windows 8.1 is just the way to go instead of trying to stay with windows 7. I"ve seen way way too many posts on all kinds of forums about "i like windows 7.. it works.. " blah blah.. anyway

I'm guessing Windows 7 will be around as long as XP has been. Government organisations and other companies will want to get some mileage out of it like they have xp ...10 years before they're ready to change probably. I'm on W8.1 now but W7 was spot on.

10 years?? no way buddy, the way facebook and apple have changed our views on how things need to change now.. that 10 years may be 3-4 years as they probably will make some huge change in operating systems that will require everyone to use this and that.. hmm.. lets take apple - apple created an ipad and then iOS.. they then updated iOS from 7-8.. guess what? if you still have iOS 7 you can't even use/download programs until you instal iOS 8! so my example shows you that Apple forces all users to upgrade to iOS 8 in order to get anything new or in the now..

will not windows be the same when they make that new "generation" change.. this generation of facebook where you "need" an update every 2 weeks? or new "virus" signatures every day?? can they even make that many new virus signatures in 1 day?

anyway.. i'm wasting posts here..

I agree. I hated W8 at first (despite having moved from Vista) but once I got to know it all was (and is) fine for me. I don't use Classic shell or anything that changes it back to how things used to be, just got used to the new ways of doing things, and I do find some things easier than before. The snipping tool is great, especially for posting things on this forum.

Yes exactly. I use System to get to advanced setting(don't need to go into File Explorer and right-click This PC>properties then) What I use the most though is Computer Management(that's my one stop shopping for the advanced tool's), and I use it to Sign Out or Shutdown no matter where I am, be it Desktop, Start screen, All Apps screen or using a metro app. Microsoft went with over kill implementing the shut down button in 8.1 update.

My sentiments echo yours Cliff S.
