I have a new Acer laptop (See Profile for spec) and trying get it to boot from a Macrium Reflect disk I made but no go booting from it so far. The boot menu needs setting up or it's something to do with Secure Boot possibly. I'm very new to W8 so any advice would be gratefully received as to getting it to boot off DVD. I tried making the inbuilt DVD player first device above Boot Manager but got a Secure Boot Fail... I've reversed this back to default. Also, I'm not familiar with the first boot device item BOOt Manager ...should this always be first? I am conversant with Macrium with W7 but not sure about the right way with W8.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/17058-secure-boot-enable-disable-uefi.html

Hi. Thanks for the welcome. Unfortunately the BIOS shown in the Acer video didn't match mine so it wouldn't work for me. In case anybody is interested what I had to do to disable Secure Boot, after a search, was:

Reboot, then press F2 to get into the BIOS > Select Security tab > Select Set Supervisor Password > Enter a password > Press Enter > Enter the same password again > Press Enter. Then select Boot tab > Select Secure Boot > Press Enter > Select Disabled > Press Enter. You can go back to reset your Supervisor password back to nothing at this point if you want by inputting your password and just press Enter 3 times to clear it then press F10 to save and exit.

I put the DVD player listing in the top slot in the boot sequence in the BIOS above Boot Manager and the Macrium boot disk started ok. Now to try imaging with Macrium on W8. :)

If this is an UEFI PC, you have to disable secure boot and set the BIOS in legacy mode.

Hi whs. How do I put it in Legacy Mode? Will Macrium not work properly without doing it? I booted up ok with it but haven't tried imaging yet. It's WinPE 5.0

So, it doesn't matter with this disk? What if I need to enable Legacy for another disk, how would I do it?

via bios settings - but most disks will boot via UEFi.. If you look at the files on the disk (you may have to allow to show hidden files in explorer) you will find an "efi" folder and a bootmgr.efi file.. those are the UEFI boot files

View attachment 55921

For legacy boot it uses - boot folder and bootmgr file

if it by-passes the media boot process - that is secure boot that prevents the media from booting - so you have to disable secure boot..
WinPE should boot with secure boot enabled..

If it booted, you are home free and it will work.

WinPE 3.1 didn't when it was on. Don't know about WinPE 5.0 which I'm using now but Secure Boot was off and it works.

I might check it out again later but my main problem is solved. Thanks Guys :)

I restored Secure Boot in the BIOS and my WinPE 5.3 does indeed work booting from it so I'll leave it on. Cheers
