Sleep, hibernate or shut down?

Should I put my laptop to sleep, hibernate it or shut it down when I'm not using it? I changed the settings so my laptop goes into hibernation mode when I close the lid or press the power button. I'm curious what you all think.

It depends entirely on how you use your computer/laptop and how long its going to be unused in my opinion ,I shutdown when I go to work ,I use sleep when I'm at home and used it every now and then ,shut it down most nights ,I never use hibernate .

I always make it a point to shut down my desktop (windows 7) when I don't plan on using it for a while even if its a few hours. However, for my windows 8.1 tablet, I always put to it sleep/hibernate since I always keep it close to me when I need to check something online or do a quick status post on facebook/twitter.

This is a custom made build PC that I put together. It may be low on the spec sheet but its decent enough to run a few games.
All the way back to the Arc, Sleep and Hibernate have had problems. So for me, neither have any place on my PC (s).
Even the MS Shutdown can sometimes puke. That's why for over a decade I've used a Quick Shutdown Shortcut.
MS Engineers gave us the ability to use it. Here is the shortcut:

%windir%\System32\Shutdown.exe /s /t 0

The exact syntax is critical, so I suggest using Copy & Paste, if you're going to use it.
I now have it running on over 100 PC's and it's working flawlessly.

It's been not only my opinion, but my SOP, to turn off a computer that is not being used.
The only SAFE computer, is one that has NO power applied to it. After my PC shuts itself down,
I then turn OFF the power strip that it's plugged into. So it's OFF, Cold, Dead and SAFE!

Cheers mates, and Happy New Year!

If you use it all day let it go to sleep, when you`re done for the day, shut it off.

Hybernate makes most sense if you work on something and want to get back to work with same thing as soon as it's on again.
Sleep is almost same thing but for shorter periods.
Off is safest for transport and longer periods of intended inactivity.
Off and unplugged for thunderstorms and other electrical hazards and battery out would be next step up.

I use sleep exclusively. I only shut down/restart when windows update makes me; sometimes I go months between shutdowns. Never had a crash or blue screen. I also leave Chrome running all the time, every once in a while it starts getting slow so I restart it, this also allows any chrome updates to happen.

Acer has done something to sleep that makes it go into a "deep sleep" mode after 12 hours or so, I guess to save energy. Once that happens it takes about 15 seconds to start instead of 5, but it is still quick.

Needless to say this laptop is the most reliable PC I've ever had. Starting it up from sleep in a few seconds is a real bonus.

Should I put my laptop to sleep, hibernate it or shut it down when I'm not using it? I changed the settings so my laptop goes into hibernation mode when I close the lid or press the power button. I'm curious what you all think.

Hi, I shut it down for transport, let it sleep after 30min running on battery when I don't use it, and on when it's plug as my update and maintenance is set in night time. And if I didn't shut it down after few days I do a restart. I don't use the hibernation.
