File location - searching directories - Drive label error

Hi

Windows 8.1PRo x64

Have several drives, however, the E drive where I store data is reporting the wrong drive location (see jpeg).

Attempting to open the item location after doing a wildcard search *.* of any directory and sub directory results in an error.

Some of the folders, when searching wildcard *.*, return no results for either files or subfolders, even though these are contained within.

Hmm just spotted this could it be the tick box below "Allow this file contents to be indexed....."?

Open location error.jpgproperties 2.jpgproperties.jpg

This drive has been the same pc but did have windows xp, 7 then windows 8 to 8.1

All other drives do not have this issue.

I have serched regarding indexing but I am not confident that's necessarily the issue and as usual need the Gurus' of this forum to help (I hope).

Any questions bleep me and I'll do what I can to answer them.

The data was originally on an older drive and got transfered to this new drive approximately 12 months plus ago.

I have had the issue for a while but not really addressed it.

Have tried relabelling the volume in diskmanagemer to M and back again (no luck).

I dont really have the hard drive capacity to transfer and back, but I dont believe it's the drive I believe it's the data markings...I am sure you all know the technical term, not sure how to define it myself.

Look forward to your help and resolve.

Thanks people

...and seasonal greetings, merry christmas and cheer :)

Greetings,
Have you checked the drive's health with any HDD monitoring programs? If not I would suggest doing so with Hard Disk Sentinel.
Download Hard Disk Sentinel (just download the version on the top)
Also it can tell you if any of your other hard drives are having issues :)
Please report back.

Hi Thanks for the response.

Ran HDS in trial mode, no issues...all green at 100%.
No other drives are having this issue.

I am pretty confident this is more software based than hardware, no issue with the harddrive. It's a relatively new drive (last 12 months).

Tried searching wildcards on various folders and not returning any files in 'some' folders, seems odd as now seems intermittent,

Ran virus checker and root checker all good. I am confident it's not a virus.

Just copied one directory to another drive, searched; result returned all fine.

Copied folder back; no items found in search.

I am so confident this is indexing, settings or some registry issue (in my humble experience).

But I have no idea what I've actually done. :(

Wondering if anyone can chime in with any ideas of what's happened please?

Hi

Have tried different methods.

1st deleted INDEX file. Opened index options, disabled windows search in "services.msc". Set new index locations and index file location. " days later after scanning 1,500,000+ files, still issue is present.

2nd was to simply try moving a directory and it's contents to another drive. Searching the folder *.* wildcard method, the directory location in the details column still reports incorrect file location ie Physically on hard drive labelh and reporting hard drive location "M".
Moved the folder back to orignal location Hard Drive Label E. Try the wildcard search again, still reporting location "M".

What I noticed :

When setting/selecting drives to index I have the main data drive label E, index keeps seeing this drive as "M" and whilst there is another drive with label M, it appears windows (or something) sees only one M drive and is not allowing to select both E and M drive for indexing.

Trying to reindex again :( have relabelled drive M as drive X and rebooted.

Will see how this goes but hoping (as I don;t think this will solve the issue), someone may drop in and have some ideas.

Both drives are fine. No issue with hard sdisk sentinel, chckdsk all good.

Incidentally, not all the files on the drive are displaying this issue. Only certain files in certain folders and sub directories.

Its almost as though some files have been hardcoded with there location as M.

It's worth noting that these files, when refered to by host programs, are located.

It's only the windows search function that is hitting the incorrect location return information.

Addum.

I've just discovered a solution and be interested with views.

Disabled windows search in services.msc via properties disabled.

Removed all index locations.

Delect all subfiles and folders in \Index folder.

Wildcard search not returns the corrects results.

So giving me an indication that somewhere between windows reg and windows index functions, something is cross wired!

No solution to the index issue - unable to resolve.

Switched the Indexing off and deleted all the relevant files in the folder(s).

Working as it should - very bizarre
