Hello-

I decided to sell my laptop because I'm going on deployment soon, and I did a factory restore to wipe it clean.. Now when I go to turn it on it shows the HP logo says diagnosing system and repairs, then restarts its self.. It is stuck in an infinite loop. I can't even push any keys to enter the BIOS. No keys do anything. Is there anything I can do to make this stop? Hp Laptop windows 8.

Another option is to order a set of factory recovery media and try it again with that. They'll likely charge you a fee for it and you'll have to wait for it to be shipped to you. Me personally, I'd rather do a clean install like caperjack suggested. It's always nice to have options though.

Don't have a key or just don't know what it is? If it's an embedded OEM key, the install media from option one in the link caperjack posted will read it and use it automatically during install. Even 8.0 OEM keys. You don't need to know what it is. You do need to know what version of 8.1 to install though. It has to match the factory installed version for the embedded key to work correctly.

I don't have my box or papers the computer came with, which has they key... I bought it oem with 8 on it.. So the BIOS saves the key? I burnt 8.1 onto a disk but it's not working still stuck in a boot loop.

On systems with Windows 8 installed at the factory, the OEM key is stored in the BIOS. Windows 8 install media is coded to look for it and use it automatically. The caveat with option one, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help is you have to install the correct version. If the PC came with Pro you need to install Pro to use the embedded key. If it came with only Core you have to install Core etc. When I say Core I mean just the non Pro version of 8.1. Yours is most likely Core. If it is Pro the sticker on the bottom of the PC should say Windows 8 Pro. The download in the link I posted will install and activate with Windows 8.0 keys and 8.1 keys.

To get out of the boot loop try this: Power down > unplug the power pack and remove the battery > then press and hold down the power button for about 5 seconds. Now plug the power pack back in, battery too if you want, then power up and press the key to access your BIOS. Have your install media plugged and see if you can boot from it.

Just to also add, when I downloaded the windows 8.1 ISO file the first options asked for language, Edition, and Architecture.. I picked English, 8.1, and 64 Bit.

I looked up the model number on my laptop. 15-e012nr and saw it was 64 bit.

I'm confused with all the options for windows 8.1.. I don't know if i picked the right one.. Theres' 8.1, 8.1N, 8.1N Pro, 8.1 Pro, 8.1 Single Language. And like i said i just picked the 8.1 option. I then burnt it to a DVD, I put it in my other laptop, and fired it up, and nothing happened just did it's usual loop.. turned it off tired it again, and still no luck. It's not acknowledging the disk.

Just saw your post, we must have posted at the same time. I will give it a try. As for a sticker on the laptop the only one i have says Windows 8 nothing else.

Did you switch the boot order to the optical drive? If the BIOS is set to boot from the hard drive first you'll never boot from the DVD. My ASUS laptop has a quick boot option where I can boot from another device for that one boot up. All I do is press the esc key and I can boot from DVD or a USB thumb drive. On the next reboot it goes back to the default, my hard drive. Other wise I have to go into the BIOS and manually change the first boot device to USB. I do all my installs from USB thumb drives these days. I haven't burned a DVD in a dogs age. It's just easier and faster to install from USB.

Find the menu that lists what devices the PC boots from and what order they are accessed. If you are trying to install from a DVD drive move it up so its first on the list. Put your DVD in the drive. Then save settings and reboot. You should get a message saying, press any key to boot from DVD. Press a key and then follow the menus.

As far as what version to try, I'd ignore the "N" versions, those are special versions that aren't used all that much. If your sticker doesn't say Pro then your looking at Core or the Single Language version. "Windows 8.1" is Core, try that first. If you don't get prompted to enter a Product code you'll know you guessed right.

Earlier on in this thread you stated you burnt a disk? Are you installing from a DVD or a USB thumb drive? If your trying to install from a DVD you need to set the BIOS like this:

Internal CD/DVD
OS Boot Manger
USB CD/DVD
USB Diskette on Key USB/Hard Drive
! Network Adapter

Then on the first reboot after Windows installs take the DVD out.
