winhl help needed

Hi, there is something called winhlp32 that used to be used back in the day for help files before compiled html help files came along...

Unfortunately, there are a few applications I use (I'm on win8.1 now) that need access to it.

There is actually a winhlp32 (64 bit version - since the 32 bit version refuses to allow itself to be installed) that I was able to install (from MS site) upon initial installation of win8.1... all worked fine for a while until I decided to, you guessed it, install a massive optional windows 8.1 update... this update is so massive it was nearly 1GB, leading me to suspect it is almost a service pack by another name...

and then, yeah, everything else was working fine but it completely broke hlp file support... and reinstalling (I tried many times) the 64 bit winhlp file from the microsoft site didn't work... It just plain refuses to load any winhlp file. HTML help of course works fine since that is another system.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do? Aside from a System Restore, I don't even remember when it should be... this was 1 to 2 months ago I guess but I can't be more specific. I know, serves myself right for installing an optional update.
