Here is my dilemma and hope i can get help here. I have an Alienware Aurora R4 desktop and i reformatted it 3 weeks ago with win 8.1. Everything is working fine, BUT i cant get into BIOS, and i want to get to the bios because i want to boot from recovery media(testing my media) at boot in case i have a boot problem i can use my AX64 recovery disc. When i boot, my keys on the keyboard F2,4, or 12 not working to go into BIOS. I also have a SSD as my primary for windows 8.1 OS. I searched articles and went into recovery and then choose UEFI firmware changes, it then boots to my BIOS but keyboard or mouse doesn't work. I borrowed a usb dell keyboard thinking its the keyboard, i get same results. I tried holding shift key plus shutdown to see if i see f2 or f12, nothing. So how can i ever get into boot to change sequence so it can boot from cd if i cant get into BIOS. I hope someone can help since i have been killing my brain cells for two days trying everything i can. Thanks for any help.

If this is a USB or wireless keyboard you might have to get a PS2 type keyboard to get into the BIOS. Then once in the BIOS, set the USB section to "Legacy" or something like that. This way you should be able to use a USB/Wireless keyboard to enter the BIOS.

Thanks.

You don't have to buy a whole new keyboard, just find and use a USB to PS2 adapter. You probably have one laying around don't even know it :)

Anyway you can get one for dirt cheap from Amazon, or maybe one of your local electronics store. WAY cheaper than buying a new keyboard ;)

Let us know.

i finally did it, i took all plugs off and only left the keyboard, Bingo it worked, i was able to go to bios but i was disappointed that all this work that the dvd i burned to boot from for AX64 recovery program did not work, i guess i need to redo it. I wanted to test if i have a no boot problem that i can use my AX64 recovery disk to boot from saved backups, I want to thank all for the help.

Try turning off Window 8's Fast Startup. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html I had the same issue on my ASUS laptop, turning off windows fast startup let me get into the BIOS. You can also try this, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/20256-uefi-firmware-settings-boot-inside-windows-8-a.html if you have a UEFI BIOS and installed in UEFI mode.

Fast Startup is a hybrid sleep mode and a side effect of the quick startup is you can't get into the BIOS. The PC doesn't really fully shut down.

Best choice is to use a USB thumb drive to create the backup

usb is better than DVD?
Its faster for one,most/or a lot of new laptops only allow user to use a thumb drive do make a recovery 'when told to when you first boot a new laptop

:ditto: My USB Recovery Thumb Drive for my laptop was 16 GB. That was using the Copy OEM recovery Partition to recovery drive option. I do all of my installs from USB 2.0 thumb drives. Trust me, it is considerably faster than doing an install from optical media. :thumb:
