Windows 8.1 - Desktop clock wrong after start-up.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have a problem which it seems many others have experienced...

Everytime I start my computer, the clock on the lower right hand corner of the desktop is wrong.

If I re-synchronize it, it remains correct until I turn off the computer.

I'm running Windows 8.1 and have an Asus Z97-A motherboard.

When I go into BIOS, the clock doesn't seem to be advancing (I'm guessing that the time on the BIOS clock should show advancing seconds).

When I searched for a solution online, I read lots of "fixes" but I don't know what the definitive fix would be. I'm a relative novice when it comes to BIOS, UEFI, etc., so I don't want to screw things up. My computer seems to be working ok, other than the time issue.

One thing I read online was to update the firmware to the most current version. I'm confused as to how to do this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

jeff

How old is it ?

Could be the CMOS battery.

The CMOS battery is by far the most common cause of this problem.
I would try a new battery before anything else.

Do not update the BIOS. If that should fail (which can happen even if you do everything right) you could end up with an expensive doorstop.

Are you dual booting Linux??? I have seen lots of PCs that dual boot Linux ( set to GMT Time ) and Windows ( set to local time ). Then everytime you boot Linux and then shut down it changes the clock.

OP did not mention anything about dual booting with Linux.
However, FYI, In Linux, just edit: /etc/default/rcS and change the setting of UTC from yes to no
then the Windows time and Linux time will be in sync.

Hi there

In the BIOS there might be a setting to automatically allow for daylight saving time -- it should work just fine.

Assuming the CMOS battery is OK and you are dual booting in Linux set Linux to use one of the Time servers for your locality (NTP something) -- then at boot you are always correct.

I think Windows can also set the time from a Time server but I've always found Windows boots with the correct time (again assuming the CMOS battery is OK).

Cheers

Thanks everyone for your responses. To clarify, I'm not dual booting Linux.

Here's the problem in a nutshell:

1. If I set the clock, it will remain correct until the computer is powered down or hibernating. Then the clock is frozen in time until I start it up again. This doesn't appear to be a daylight savings or time zone issue. The date and time settings both are off by the length of time that the computer is powered down/hibernating.

2. When I went into BIOS, the seconds on the clock were not advancing on the BIOS screen. I'm not sure if this is a salient point or not.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. If this is as simple as a CMOS battery issue, that would be a relatively simple fix. What I'm having trouble figuring out is whether this is a known problem that was rectified in the motherboard's firmware updates?

My advice would be to replace the CMOS battery first. I have seen this cause your problem more than once on my own computers. Everything else together is much less likely. If the battery does not solve the problem other possibilities can be investigated. A BIOS update is not something to be taken lightly.

The bios not keeping time is most definitely the problem, all 5 of my computers keep the correct time in the bios, whether showing seconds or only minutes. When you resume from sleep or hibernate windows should reset the time within a minute or less. If you haven`t done it yet, set the bios to defaults and go from there. As mentioned the battery is most likely the culprit, check and make sure it`s seated properly.

Yea, don't care how new a MB is, can still be a bad battery. Lol, nice visual David! :)
