8.1 kills or shuts down programs

Hi all!
New 8.1 user here, I'll try not to rant...lol
I like and am used to Microsoft Works calendar. I installed it no problem. When I use the import option in Works Calendar the program closes and disappears. As an option I've tried manually moving the data files to the calendar directory but it doesn't show up in the program. I've tried getting used to the calendar provided with 8.1 but like everything else it seems counter intuitive.
It seems that if 8.1 doesn't like a program it closes it down.
Anyone have any insight?

Thanks in advance,

Marc

Which version of Works? I have version 9 [file dates of 2007] on my 64-bit Win7, don't use it much but so far no problems. Could be that Win8.1 is too new for your Works. Also could be the data files are a bit corrupted.

Always worth a try, do a 'troubleshoot compatibility' (mouse right click on the Works icon), this sometimes fixes 'things' that happens with older programs.

I'm running Works 6.0
Everything else in works seems to be working fine. The Calendar works but it would be nice to import my schedules.

Just tried that but I get no "troubleshoot compatibility" option when I right click.

Works 6 is pretty darn old.. What you describe sounds like the app just crashing. Chances are, it has a bug in it that isn't compatible with Windows 8.x.

Try right clicking on the Works application icon, then going to Properties. Then switch to the compatibility tab. Click the Run Compatibility Troubleshooter button.

I just installed Microsoft Works 9 on my Win8.1, seems to be fine. Downside is it hasn't been published for awhile, might find it on surplus software sites. Most generally it's an OEM version, included on new computers a few years ago.

Edit: forgot to mention my Win8.1 is the 64-bit version.

I did the compatability test and it said uncompatable program. Funny thing is it runs fine until you try to import the data. Oh well, I'm going to just manually addd my dates and reminders.

Thanks all for your help!
