I just installed windows 8 from windows 7. Everything seems fine so far except my mouse pointer is invisible. I can still click links and tabs but I just cannot see the mouse pointer. Does anyone know how to get it to show up?

If rebooting doesn't work, try connecting the mouse at a different port. If that doesn't work, borrow another mouse and see if it works. If you can get to Control Panel, go to "Mouse" and choose a large pointer.

How are you able to click links and tabs without seeing the pointer?

You could also try updating Pointing device driver.

Tricky if you can't use your mouse.

Might need to do it from outside win8 - boot up your pe disc, load the software hive as PE_SOFT

Set is as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE_SOFT\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"EnableCursorSuppression"=dword:00000000

Same thing happened to me. The only thing that worked was to turn on mouse trails. But i guess i didn't try what SIW2 recommended.

I was having the same issue, my mouse wouldn't show. You could see items as you hovered over them they would highlight. Anyways, I went into my device manager and tried to update my mouse pointer driver as Brummyfan suggested, but it wouldn't update, it said Windows has determined the driver software for you device was up to date, so I uninstalled the driver and my mouse pointer returned.

Hope this helps someone else.

SOLVED: Disappearing cursor on Asus touchscreen PCs

Good news — at least for owners of an Asus Ultrabook like the Zenbook UX301.
With all due respect for various tip in this thread, the problem is not addressed with a display driver, a mouse setting, or the touchpad gesture feature. It is not solved via Control Panel or Device Manager. That’s not it at all...

SYMPTOM:

Cursor disappears after some bootups and not others. The touch pad and mouse are still usable, but it is difficult to tell where the cursor is, because the user can only see its affect on icons as they are passed over and buttons when they are clicked.

The problem sometimes clears with logout/login, but it is frustrating, because there is no apparent cause or distinction between success and loss of cursor.

SOLUTION (for Asus PCs, or possibly just Asus notebooks):

When powering, do not swipe the wallpaper up with a finger. Instead, click it with your mouse or touch pad (either will do). Then use the mouse again by clicking in the password field. (Do not simply begin to type the unlock code. Use the mouse first!).
Windows will launch into the desktop with a visible cursor. No more problem.

ANALYSIS:

I don
t work for Asus or Microsoft. But I am a computer engineer and a systems architect. In my opinion, the symptom is a result of coding in the BIOS (probably not a bug within Windows). At least for us Asus notebook users, the PC sets a flag that presumes touch-pointer operation and not use of a mouse or track pad.

CONCLUSION:

The problem is resolved by “asserting” the mouse with the steps described above: Click to roll up the boot wallpaper and again before typing a password or unlock code. By doing this, the PC will switch between mouse and touch pointer control throughout the Windows session.

I have owned my PC for one month. It has been a very frustrating month...that is, until I stumbled upon this solution.

I don't have an oem machine, so what was posted above was the solution I used. IIRc that was a long time ago, probably Windows 8.0.

Sounds like something entirely different for oem touchscreen devices.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, did you try just changing cursor ? Might be corrupt or missing ?

Hi I had the same problem in my surface Pro connected to a larger touch screen.
Your solution works! I tried all of the other solutions to no avail.
Guess we have to wait for Microsoft to update for it to go away completely - But for now THANKS

That worked for me on my HP touch-enabled laptop as well. I was not using touch at the time, but separate monitors, keyboard and mouse, so touch complications didn't occur to me.

All I needed to do was lock the computer - Win-L - and the mouse pointer came back. I then clicked the mouse to unlock and clicked the mouse on the password field, and I still had the pointer when unlocked.
