I have Windows 8.1 and I run an application that needs his folder not to be read only in order to save some progress of my work. How can I remove the read only from the folder of my application? I have tried CMD, read only remover tool, chande ownership, permisions, safe mode. Just about anything that I could find. Maybe I have done something wrong or complete. Plese help me!

I had a couple programs that had the same issue. I uninstalled them then reinstalled to the root of C: rather than Program Files folder and they work fine now. HTH

If the folder is in use by a program that requires it to be read only then you cannot change the attributes as long as the program is running. Now which program is using it on the other hand is pretty easy if you follow this guide:

- filesystems - Easy way to find out which process is locking a file or folder in Windows? - Super User

Now. what you allso could do is burn a OS(ubuntu) to a cd\dvd or a flashdrive, reboot computer, find folder and remove the read only attribute.

Then restart, remove disk and it should be a folder you can do what you want with. :D

Try booting to Safe Mode, see if you can do it there.

If not, enable the hidden Administrator account then login as Administrator and see if that works.

Press WIN + X to open Start context menu.

Select Command Prompt (Admin).

Type net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter.
Close the Command Prompt window.
Reboot.
Login as administrator and try it.

Type net user administrator /active:no and press Enter to hide it again when done.

Can you rename the folder then create a new folder with the correct name and copy or move everything from the renamed folder to the new one if the new one can have the R/O flag reset?

I can try and I think I can rename and move. But the thing is that the new folder will be read only also. :|

I managed to change the program in order to work. I talked to the developer (it is a open source software) and he made some changes to work on me.
Thank you all very much!
