Solved How do I automate display for different screens

Hi everyone. This is probably a simple issue. I have just bought an ASUS computer running Windows 8.1. My old computer (Windows 7), would detect when I plug in a new screen (e.g. connecting my laptop to my desktop screen) and automatically change the screen settings for that screen. Now I find I have to re-start every time I plug in a new screen for the display settings to work. Then re-start again when I go back to using the laptop screen.

Wondered if anyone could advise what I'm doing wrong.

Monitors typically are NOT "hot-swappable" - and for good reason - you risk shorting out the card and/or monitor if the plug is not perfectly aligned while inserting or removing. This is one reason KVM switches are typically recommended.

IMO, you've been lucky if you were successful in the past and I recommend you just leave the external monitor connected, or just plan on shutting down, connecting then boot up when connecting it.
